Even The Sparrows

I was having my morning coffee at my friends’ house on Saturday. Looking out the window, the birds had caught my eye—specifically the sparrows.

They were a pair going into and out of the birdhouse. I haven’t the fanciest idea if they had eggs inside or not.

Now, of course, watching these birds immediately brought to mind this verse in Matthew 10:29-31.

Not being much of a bird person myself, I couldn’t help but wonder about these birds. However, since the sparrows had caught my attention that morning, I decided to look up some information about them.

This is what I found out. Sparrows can be easily recognized because they live close to humans. They are social and often live in colonies. I had no idea that they are carnivores (meat-eaters) by nature. But because they live near humans, eating insects and moths, their eating habits have changed.

Interestingly, because they live close to humans, they began to eat ” served food”, when people started to make birdhouses. They are monogamous and typically mate for life, and apparently, they like dust baths.

Watching these birds that morning immediately brought to mind this verse in Matthew 10:29-31

Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father’s care. And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered.  So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.

Matthew 10:2-31 NIV

This reminds me of God’s love and just how deeply important we are to him. Jesus used an ordinary bird to illustrate this profound truth. Jesus is telling us that God is aware of everything that happens, even to sparrows.

Because God places such value on us, we don’t need to fear personal threats or difficult times. These can’t jostle God’s love nor uproot his Spirit from within us.
