“Evermore He Stands at the Door”
Night descended, solemn, heavy, upon my weary soul once more. And in that hush, that trembling quiet, I felt a stirring at my spirit’s door, A gentle knock, no louder than a whisper drifting across eternity’s floor. I rose, uncertain, heart unsettled, wondering what Presence sought me now, what message pressed through shadowed corridors, what voice desired to speak evermore.
The air grew thick with holy weight, as though the heavens leaned close to listen. And there, soft, persistent, came the knock again, A summons neither harsh nor hurried, but patient… ancient… familiar.
I called into the darkness, “Lord, is it You who beckons me?” For Scripture declares that He stands and knocks, waiting for the one who will open wide the door and welcome Him within.
Yet doubt, my old and spectral companion, drifted in like a cold wind beneath the threshold. “What if it is not Him?” doubt murmured. “What if it is only your own longing echoing back to you?” Its voice slithered through my thoughts, A shadow seeking to eclipse the Light.
But the knock continued, steady, unwavering. A rhythm that seemed to pulse with divine intention. And suddenly I remembered the psalmist’s cry: “When my heart is overwhelmed, lead me to the Rock that is higher than I.”
The Rock does not knock in vain. The Shepherd does not call without purpose. The Savior does not seek without desire to save.
So, I stepped toward the door of my spirit, Hands trembling, breath shallow, and whispered, “Lord, if it is You, speak. Your servant listens.”
The door creaked open, slow, deliberate. And though no figure stood before me, the room filled with Presence. Warmth spilled into every corner, chasing away the chill of doubt. The gloom of fear, the heaviness of sorrow.
A voice, not heard with ears, but felt with the soul, spoke into the marrow of my being:
“I have been with you in every midnight. I have waited through every silence. I have knocked through every season so that you might know you are never alone.”
My knees weakened beneath the weight of mercy. My eyes burned with the sting of grace. And I knew, beyond all knowing, that Christ had come close once more, not in thunder, nor in spectacle, but in gentle persistence and holy affection.
For He is the One who seeks the wandering. The One who restores the broken. The One who whispers hope into hollow places. He is the Light that the darkness cannot comprehend.
And as His Presence wrapped around me, I felt the final trembling of doubt fade away, not with violence, but with truth. “Lord,” I breathed, “Stay with me, not just tonight, but evermore.” And the knock ceased, for the door was open wide.
