Gennadius of Constantinople's commentary on 1 Corinthians in English.
Gennadius of Constantinople's commentary on 1 Corinthians.
He has a lot of independent convergence views on Baptism that is very much the same as Martin Luther.
Despite this, they were still both in error on Baptismal regeneration.
Thank you to Karl Staab for Pauluskommentare aus der griechischen Kirche.
Thank you to Brother Don Nesbitt, the Lord's bloodhound for sounding the alarm about Robert Breaker. His youtube handle is @w46try7.
“The Syrian group (Antiochan Fathers) is plainly a group of Bible-believing, Bible-preaching people who were first called “Christians” at Antioch and were the first to send out missionaries with the gospel (Acts 13:1–5). Any “neutral approach” which refuses to give precedence to THIS type of text (in order to appear scholarly) must ignore the facts of church history while searching for the “original manuscripts.”“ – Dr. Peter S. Ruckman, The Christian’s Handbook of Manuscript Evidence, Chapter 6

1 Corinthians 10:1–5
In these verses, he wishes to instruct them in what is fitting by drawing a comparison with the ancients, showing that they too, as in a figure, were deemed worthy of the same privileges. For since the example is shown to be so apt, he is found justly admonishing them not to commit similar offenses, lest they suffer similar penalties.
Now, their being under the cloud was an indication of the grace of the Spirit; for just as the cloud, overshadowing them, delivered them from the harm of the Egyptians, so also grace delivers us from demonic malice.
And their passing through the sea corresponds to our experience in this regard: that what the passage through the sea provided for them, completely delivering them from their enemies and granting them sure freedom from that time forward, this very thing Baptism has become for us against our enemies.
And the statement, they were baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea, signifies this: that just as they, having obtained these things, pledged to live according to the Mosaic laws, so we also, receiving the Spirit of adoption in Baptism, establish covenants and agreements to live henceforward according to the commandments of Christ.
1 Corinthians 12:28
He means, evidently, the workings of miraculous powers.
1 Corinthians 13:2
Here he does not mean the faith of believers, which is common and universal, but the spiritual gift (charisma) of faith. For there was a particular kind of gift homonymously called "faith," which was granted at that time to many of the devout for the manifestation of their participation in the Spirit.
Concerning this the Lord also says in the Gospels: If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Be removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and it shall come to pass. For He was certainly not addressing them as people who were completely devoid of common faith.
