There’s a quiet, freeing truth tucked inside Paul’s words in The Message translation of Colossians 1:25. He says: “God’s way of helping me serve you, laying out the whole truth.” It’s simple. It’s humble. And it’s a reminder many of us need more than we admit.

God Chooses How He Uses Us

Paul doesn’t brag about his calling. He doesn’t elevate his role. He doesn’t pretend he chose it. He simply acknowledges that God decided how Paul would serve, and Paul accepted it. That’s a hard truth for us sometimes. We want God to use us in ways that feel impressive, visible, or celebrated. We want platforms, not processes. We want influence, not inconvenience. But Paul reminds us that calling is not self‑selected. It’s God‑assigned. And whatever God assigns is holy.

Service Isn’t Always Glamorous, But It’s Always Sacred

Paul’s calling involved suffering, travel, imprisonment, misunderstandings, and constant spiritual labor. Yet he still said: “God’s way of helping me serve you…” He didn’t resent the way God used him. He didn’t compare his calling to someone else’s. He didn’t try to trade assignments. He embraced it. Because when God chooses how He uses you, He also supplies the grace to carry it.

Your Calling Might Look Ordinary, But It’s Not

Maybe God uses you through quiet faithfulness. Maybe He uses you through encouragement no one sees. Maybe He uses you through parenting, caregiving, mentoring, or simply showing up when others don’t. Maybe He uses you in ways that feel small. But nothing God touches is small. If God chose this way to use you, then this way is holy.

Truth-Telling Is Part of the Calling

Paul says his assignment was to “lay out the whole truth.” Not half of it. Not the comfortable parts. Not the parts people preferred. Your calling will always involve truth, living it, speaking it, embodying it, and God will give you the courage to carry it.

Scriptures for Reflection

  • Colossians 1:25 — God’s way of helping us serve
  • 1 Corinthians 12:4–7 — Different gifts, same Spirit
  • Ephesians 2:10 — Created for good works prepared in advance
  • Romans 12:6–8 — Use the gift God gave you

The Freedom in Paul’s Words

You don’t have to fight for a calling. You don’t have to manufacture purpose. You don’t have to chase significance. Just be faithful to the way God chose to use you. Because His way is always the right way.
