Healthy Balance
As an amputee, I’ve learned the hard way regarding the importance of healthy balance; both physically and in life. After surviving a near-death motorcycle accident, the term ‘healthy balance’ took on an entirely new meaning for me.
By definition, healthy balance simply means being free from disease or pain; steady or stable.
Having been an athlete, I learned a great deal about physical health and its importance for optimal performance. However, regardless of how physically fit my body was, once I experienced the loss of a limb, I was anything but steady — let alone healthy. My body was filled with chronic infections and I experienced excruciating pain. The only chance for saving my life was to remove a significant part of my body.
Loss of any kind is difficult. Many times, it is life altering. Wounds of any kind can leave behind permanent scars. The question is, what do you do with these scars? Do you allow losses to rob your joy and keep you weak? Or, do you use those battle scars as reminders of what you’ve overcome?
The ONLY way I have been able to have a joy-filled life after losing a limb is by giving it all to God. I was not able to survive on my own during the years of recovery, nor can I survive on my own now without God. In my experience, life is way too difficult to do it alone. Thank God, we do not have to do it alone! God says, Never will I leave you: never will I forsake you. (Hebrews 13:5)
Have you ever taken a health assessment of your life? Have you sorted through the emotional, mental, relational, physical and spiritual areas of your life? Have you done it through the lens of the Bible - talking to God about it?
If we are honest with ourselves, we all could use a tune-up in one or more areas of our lives. I encourage you to pray about this and ask God to reveal things you need to work on. Let Him show you the weaknesses you are not aware of and how best to grow as you move forward with Him. A healthy balance means we are healthy in all aspects of our lives.
Questions for Reflection:
Are you willing to take a personal evaluation of your life? More importantly, are you willing to make changes?
Are you willing to do this even if it may require a permanent severing of something that is destroying you?
