How 2 Timothy 4:3 Predicted Artificial Intelligence and AGI

2 Timothy 4:3-4

“For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.”

While I believe the social media view can be partially correct, I do not believe it is the full interpretation.

All of these views are premised upon the idea that this is a prophecy applicable to the 20th century and/or 21st century (the end days).

Assuming this takes place in the modern day, there are three views to this.

1. The YouTube/social media view.

This is the most popular modern-day view of the verse.

This is applicable to YouTube/social media.

Christians have a bunch of teachers online, and they can listen to anyone who tickles their ears, and opinion shop for preachers who validate their lusts.

Here's a person in their own words.

"Digital platforms allow unprecedented access to “teachers.” Believers may subconsciously reenact 2 Timothy 4:3 by curating echo chambers that soothe rather than sanctify."

2. The AI/SI view.

While I believe that the social media view can be partially correct, I do not believe it to be the full fulfillment.

“For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine;"

So, the foundation of any view that believes this is a new development occurring in the 20th century/21st century has to explain why its fulfillment is or isn't new.

The internet has made it easier to find heretics and other things; there have always been false teachers, and whether it's through televangelists/television, and before that radio, and before that the printing press and pamphlets, they have always been easy to find.

For 2 Timothy 4:3-4 to be fulfilled, it has to be a new way to heap to themselves teachers. It can't just be what they've always been doing, and social media is nothing new!

And the social media view can't even address this issue specifically.

We are in a falling away; the Church has been falling away.

But 2 Timothy 4:3-4 isn't specifically saying a falling away; it is describing an event where people won't EVEN listen to truth. You can still turn a heretic to Christian truth! This verse is describing where you are completely beyond convincing anyone away from their heaps of teachers who tell them fables.

And speaking more on the past, how is the advent of the internet any different from people converting en masse to Mormonism, the People's Temple, the Jehovah's Witnesses?

The social media perspective doesn't fully fit how the Apostle Paul describes what the teachers do, as false teachers like Robert Breaker, James Durbin, James White, or any apologist from CA (the organization, not the state) are all impersonal and parasocial. (relating to or involving a one-sided emotional connection with someone (especially a celebrity or fictional character) whom one does not know personally)

The Apostle Paul is describing people lusting to have a teacher who directly validates their lusts. Any false teacher online may have things which the listener may like, e.g., Robert Breaker saying that being vegan is a sin (which is unbiblical; read Romans 14); that is just an inadvertent lust being satiated.

(I personally eat meat, but as Dr. Peter S. Ruckman said in his Romans commentary, you can't condemn a brother for eating meat or not eating meat.)

The videos themselves are for a massive audience.

Robert Breaker purposely (and I will show in the sources) admits that he fence sits about Israel so as not to offend the anti Zionists or the Christian Zionists in his audience. His videos are meant for the mass audience.

If you wanted to eat a fried chicken sandwich from specifically Wendy's, but you got one from McDonald's; sure, it can somewhat hit the spot in a blanket way (the same way Robert Breaker may itch your ear slightly on one thing you hate, e.g., veganism), but it isn't outright hitting it; it's impersonal, it's parasocial. Robert Breaker is just teaching on something he believes, and it happens to satiate your lusts.

The Bible says it will itch your ear; mass audience intended videos can never outright itch your ears (unless it itches one slightly, e.g., hating veganism) to the specifications of how Paul described it.

The verse describes a gourmet cook, not the fast food (and I am not judging fast food eaters) of modern YouTube preachers.

It is not the full outright satiation of every lust done by the heaps of teachers described in 2 Timothy 4:3.

The verse describes personalization and specific on demand fables, not some uploaded video Robert Breaker intended for someone else.

However, if there was artificial intelligence that could create beautifully persuasive arguments about things to justify your lusts, even if it's wrong, it is still a teacher; that could work.

And this AI has to be actually good enough to itch their ears and to make fables that do not endure sound doctrine.

Let's say it's AGI, which Google's DeepMind CEO defined as being on par with Einstein.

This is a Q&A with OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman.

Audience Member: I’m curious how you’re thinking about customization. So you mentioned the federated sign in with OpenAI; bringing your memories, your context. I’m just curious if you think customization and these different post training on application specific things is a band aid, or is trying to make the core models better, and how you’re thinking about that.

Sam Altman: I mean, in some sense, I think platonic ideal state is a very tiny reasoning model with a trillion tokens of context that you put your whole life into. The model never retrains, the weights never customize, but that thing can reason across your whole context and do it efficiently. And every conversation you’ve ever had in your life, every book you’ve ever read, every email you’ve ever read, everything you’ve ever looked at is in there, plus connected all your data from other sources. And, you know, your life just keeps appending to the context, and your company just does the same thing for all your company’s data. We can’t get there today, but I think of kind of like anything else as a compromise off that platonic ideal. And that is how I would eventually, I hope, we do customization.

Now, let's assume they're equivalent in human intelligence to Einstein.

You have a teacher equivalent to one of the smartest people ever to walk this earth, who is able to understand all of the issues of your life and to make beautifully written theological treatises that are complete fables to justify your lusts.

A being as intelligent as (men of old who were not right with God on doctrine) Augustine, Aquinas, Tertullian, and John Calvin (and I do not agree theologically with any of those people) is in your pocket, able to justify you on everything.

That is why Paul said fables. Why fables? Because it has to be good; it has to be convincing. It can't be a standard LLM/AI. It has to be equivalent to Einstein to be able to particularly hit that itch!

And what if it isn't in your pocket? What if it's in a neat little box, the size of a desktop, and you can talk to it?

What if there are multiple boxes you can talk to?

What if you can buy them in human form, and you can heap them to yourself?

Paul refers to the teachers as if they're an object.

"shall they heap to themselves teachers."

How can you heap to yourself a bunch of human teachers?

Look at the newest AI trend.

"Dots are remarkably capable, always on agents built to handle everything. They’re a whole new way to work with AI—one that gets to know what matters to you, is always working on your behalf, and takes important work off your plate so you get more of your time and attention back." - OpenAI's introduction to Dots

"Grok Bot is your team of always on agents. They have their own computer, work inside tools and apps like you do, and keep working 24/7." - X.AI, Grok Bot

"Muse is a personal AI agent. It doesn’t just answer questions, it actually does the work. It helps people stay on top of things, takes tasks and projects off their plate, and turns long-term goals into action plans." - Meta, Dots

All of them (excluding Meta) are plural agents, and there's multiple AI LLMS instead of just one.

I don't even think that verse can be fulfilled until they're on par with Einstein, but the point stands: this is just the beginning.

If you want more reading on AI, look at my article Anthropic’s "Ownership" Dilemma: Why Christopher Olah’s Fear of Claude’s Consciousness Is Refuted by Biblical Dominion.

That is how 2 Timothy 4:3-4 predicts AI.

"But why would Paul warn Timothy about this, if it wasn't applicable to him?"

Well, that problem is inherently also in the text. Paul explicitly warns him when preaching, as they won't listen to anyone during the end days, but it's been 2,000+ years. The end days haven't happened.

My personal favorite answer to this problem is that Timothy is simply a stand-in for pastors, even if he was writing to Timothy, what he says isn't actually for Timothy but rather pastors. And so, this prophecy and the entire end days thing isn't actually for 1st century Timothy, but rather actual end day pastors.
