How do I connect with God when I am hurting?

"Cast your cares on the Lord, and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous be shaken.”- Psalm 55:22

When we are in pain, connecting with God is difficult because we tend to blame Him for what we are experiencing. Sometimes, we cannot help but question why we suffer when God knows we are trying to be closer to Him.

Fighting is exhausting, especially when we do not feel that God is near. But God is always there, and at the end of the day, we realize that we are the ones who are running from Him amidst our pain.

Most people who are hurt tend to shut themselves off from the people around them, even to God. But the more we carry all our suffering alone, the heavier it gets.

So, how can we connect with God, especially when we are hurting?

There is no other way to connect to God except through prayer and reading His words. Connection is always a two-way communication. We cry out to God, and He comforts us through His words.

Our prayer doesn’t need to be so religious and complex because God can still hear even the silent prayers of our hearts.

I remember the story of David when he remained connected to God while his son fought for his life.  During that time, he fasted and prayed while lying on the ground. As a parent, I cannot imagine how painful it was for him to think that his son was dying, yet he never turned away from God but remained connected to him.

2 Samuel Chapter 12 says that David continued to pray until his servant told him his son died. If you were David, wouldn’t you be mad at God and run away from him?

However, David got up from the ground and then ate after he had washed. Surprisingly, he still believes God loves his son, so he remains connected, hoping they will be reunited someday.

Like David, he surrendered his pain to God, and the Lord sustained him and never let David be shaken.

Connecting with God is just to keep praying and reading His words until something happens. Our plea may not be answered just like David’s, but still, He would give us the strength and courage to experience peace and hope that His plans are way better than our prayers.

The beauty of our suffering is realizing that we have limitations only God can sustain. It helps us develop endurance and our character that produces hope.

So, whenever we are in pain, the first option is not to disconnect from God but to be more connected to Him. You may not experience an extravagant healing from your suffering. Still, eventually, little by little, you will see God’s work through the transformation of your mindset and character toward your struggles.

God understands your pain, and as a loving Father, He never wanted us to experience suffering because He designed us for abundance in every aspect of our lives. But, since the fall of men, suffering emerged.

However, God’s amazing grace is greater than our sins. So we can still be confident that He will help and comfort us during our struggles. He can only sustain us when we are connected to Him.
