How To Hear God Speaking To You

How To Hear God Speaking To You Part 2

We continue to look into how to hear God speaking to you in part 2 of this 4 part Bible study  series. We will continue to look into the importance of spending time with God and hearing Him speak. And we will also look into how the condition of our heart plays an important part of being able to hear God speaking.

What Happens When We Don’t Seek God & Hear God Speak

When we do not take the time to seek God with all our heart, we will begin to drift away from Him. That is our human nature and our sin nature. We are either growing closer to God, or drifting away from Him. God promises in His Word that when we seek Him we will find Him.

What will happen to us if we do not ?

“For all of us have become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous deeds are like a filthy garment. And all of us wither like a leaf. And our iniquities, like the wind, take us away. There is no one who calls on Your name, who stirs himself to take hold of You. For You have hidden Your face from us and have surrendered us to the power of our wrongdoings.” – Isaiah 64:6-7

The Downward Progression Of Not Seeking God & Hearing God Speak

As you read the following verses in Jeremiah 32 and Psalm 81, note the terrible progression of God’s people. It begins in the heart, with a lack of desire for God. And a lack of desire to seek God and hear His voice. Once that happens the progression can get worse and worse fairly quickly.

The people of Israel turned in their hearts from God. Then they ignored God’s word and warnings. And their sinful lives then progressively got worse. Many eventually followed after false gods, and even sacrificed their children to the false god Molech.

“because of all the evil of the children of Israel and of the children of Judah, which they have done to provoke me to anger. They, their kings, their princes, their priests, and their prophets, and the men of Judah, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem. They have turned their back to Me and not their face. Though I taught them, teaching again and again, they would not listen and receive instruction. But they put their detestable things in the house which is called by My name, to defile it. They built the high places of Baal that are in the valley of Ben-hinnom to cause their sons and their daughters to pass through the fire to Molech. Which I had not commanded them nor had it entered My mind that they should do this abomination, to cause Judah to sin. – Jeremiah 32:32-35

God Wants His People To Hear & Obey His Voice, So He Can Bless And Use Them

“Hear, O My people, and I will admonish you. O Israel, if you would listen to Me !  You shall not follow other gods, any of the gods of the peoples who surround you. I, the LORD, am your God, Who brought you up from the land of Egypt. Open your mouth wide and I will fill it. But My people did not listen to My voice, and Israel did not obey Me. So I gave them over to the stubbornness of their heart, to walk in their own devices. Oh that My people would listen to Me, that Israel would walk in My ways ! I would quickly subdue their enemies and turn My hand against their adversaries. Those who hate the LORD would pretend obedience to Him, And their time of punishment would be forever. But I would feed you with the finest of the wheat, and with honey from the rock I would satisfy you.” – Psalm 81:8-16

When God Is Your First Love And Treasure, You Will Always Hear God Speaking

The ability to hear God speak  to you depends on your heart. When God truly is your First Love and you love Him more than anything or anyone else, then you will seek Him and hear Him speak. And when God is your Treasure and more important than anything or anyone else, then you will hear God speak. And He will reveal many things about Himself to you.

“or where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” – Matthew 6:21

“But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” – Matthew 6:33

“To the angel of the church in Ephesus write: The One who holds the seven stars in His right hand, the One who walks among the seven golden lamp stands, says this. I know your deeds and your toil and perseverance, and that you cannot tolerate evil men, and you put to the test those who call themselves apostles, and they are not, and you found them to be false. And you have perseverance and have endured for My name’s sake, and have not grown weary. But I have this against you, that you have left your first love. Therefore, remember from where you have fallen, and repent, and do the deeds you did at first; or else I am coming to you and I will remove your lamp stand from its place – unless you repent.” – Revelation 2:1-45

How To Hear God Speaking To You

Total Devotion To God Is Vital To Hear God Speak

There is some excellent reading you can do concerning being devoted to God and seeking Him in Oswald Chamber’s “My Utmost For His Highest” devotions. And some very good information about the voice and nature of God.

The Devotion Of Hearing

The Voice Of The Nature Of God

God Speaks Mainly Through His Word The Bible

God speaks mainly through His Word the Bible. It is the main way that God speaks to His people. God also speaks to people in their hearts during their “quiet time” or “prayer time”. Most people do not hear God speak by using an audible voice. Rather it is an impression or a leading that God places in a person’s heart.

God also uses people at times to speak to His followers. And God will “speak” or lead you at times through the circumstances of your life. God typically will speak to you through other people or circumstances to confirm or verify the things that He has been speaking to you  through His word.

Everything that you believe God speaks in your heart during prayer, or through Bible or circumstances, needs to line up with His Word. God will never speak to you or lead you in a way that will be contrary to His Word.

God’s Voice Is A “Still Small Voice”

“So He said, “Go forth and stand on the mountain before the Lord.”And behold, the Lord was passing by ! And a great and strong wind was rending the mountains and breaking in pieces the rocks before the Lord; but the Lord was not in the wind. And after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire. And after the fire a sound of a gentle blowing (or a “still small voice”). – Kings 19:11-12

“The voice of the Spirit of God is as gentle as a summer breeze – so gentle that unless you are living in complete fellowship and oneness with God, you will never hear it.” – Oswald Chambers

“Knowing God’s voice comes from having an INTIMATE LOVE RELATIONSHIP with God.” – Experiencing God

Your Heart Attitude Needs To Be “Speak Lord For Your Servant Is Listening”

You need to have a soft and humble heart towards God in order to hear Him speaking to you.

“Speak Lord, for your servant is listening”. – 1 Samuel 3:9

Wherever we are and whatever we are doing (church, Sunday School class, reading God’s word, praying…) we ought to have the attitude: “Speak Lord, your servant is listening”.
