ILLS OF THE BOTTLE

“Give strong drink unto him that is ready to perish, and wine unto those that be of heavy hearts” (Proverbs 31:6). The issue of drinking and drunkenness is still heavily debated within the Christian Community.

While some argue you can drink but don’t be drunk, others believe you must not taste beer, strong drink or alcohol. The point of drunkenness is still another issue of debate. Some people take half a glass of beer and they are already tipsy, while some claim to still have a clear head after two dozen bottles. The Bible is however clear on this matter.

Our reading today spells out the ills of engaging in alcohol. One way of erasing God’s word from your heart is through drunkenness. As you drink, the spirit of drunkenness gains entrance into you and opens the strong room of your heart where your spiritual weapons are stored, and begins to remove them one after the other.

This is why at crucial moments, when the assistance of the Holy Spirit is needed, some Christians who indulge in drinking call on Him to bring to their remembrance scriptures they had earlier stored but nothing happens.

The scriptures no more there. The store house of the heart has been swept clean by the spirit of drunkenness. This also affects drunken students. Show me a very forgetful person, and I will show you a drunkard. Drunkenness increases senility.

Drunkards are prone to err in judgements. They are prone to take decisions they will later regret. Drunkenness kills gradually. The more you drink the less you live. Today’s reading says kings have nothing in common with alcohol. If you have given your heart to Jesus, Revelation 1:6 says you are a king unto God.

Your kingship is greater than that of earthly kings. Engaging in drinking of alcohol erodes your kingship. No wonder you issue decrees and they stare back at you unheeded. According to Ephesians 5:18 intoxicating liquor which is also a spirit actually competes with the Holy Spirit for ownership. So the more you drink, the less the space for the Holy Spirit in your life.

Proverbs 31:6 says that the only people who are permitted to drink whenever they like, are those who have yielded themselves for destruction and those who have totally given up hope for life. You are not created for destruction and no matter how bad the situation facing you may be, there is still hope for you. Set yourself apart for God’s use today. Steer clear of that bottle!
