Life After University series pt. 4

So you have finally finished university and the world seems to be your oyster! So, what’s the next step? First of all congratulations to all graduates it is a great achievement and not a easy feat at all!  I got a few friends to share their experiences and thoughts on life after school, to offer some perspective and encouragement to those in a state of confusion about their next steps and for those who are in eager anticipation of achieving this amazing accomplishment. Over the next few weeks, I will be sharing their replies.

Sochima

History, University of Reading

1. What were your expectations for life after university?

I expected to get a job straight away and to have a fresh start. I also expected to settle back into my old area.

2. Were those expectations met?

Not at all. I found it difficult to get into the field I wanted. I also wasn’t prepared about how to write professional applications. I also didn’t realize that I needed to rest and deal with the mental health issues I experienced during my Masters. It took me a while to get used to living at home again aka the loss of freedom.

3. What would be your advice for those in their final year looking forward to life after school?

Don’t allow people or the lives of others to put pressure on you. If you need a break after, it is totally fine. Negative feelings of comparison and inefficiency will hinder/delay you from achieving your goals. Believe in your self and the amazing abilities you have.

4. What is one thing you wish you knew when you were in your final year in order to better prepare you for life after school?

Don’t compare yourself with others and focus on achieving your own goals. I wish I knew that you don’t need to sprint through life, everything will work out in God’s timing.

Huge thanks to Sochima for sharing her knowledge and experiences. Don’t forget to reach out to her and follow her if her story resonates with you!
