New Jerusalem, a Coinhering Couple

New JerusalemIn John 15:4 the Lord Jesus begins several sentences about our mutual abiding with Him. “Abide in Me and I in you.” This is a spiritual reality portrayed in John 15 by the vine and its branches.

This mutual abiding continues through the New Testament. There are many verses which declare that we are “in Christ” including Romans 8:1; 12:5; 16:3; and 1 Corinthians 1:30. There are other verses which declare that Christ is in us, such as Romans 8:10; 2 Corinthians 13:3, 5; and Colossians 1:27. We live in Him and He lives in us.

We may say that the New Jerusalem is a coinhering couple. The word coinhere means that persons are mutually indwelling each other. To coinhere is to exist in one another, to dwell in one another. Our relationship with the Lord is a relationship of union, mingling, and incorporation. We have an organic union with Him, possessing His life (1 John 5:11-12), we are mingled with Him, partaking of His divine nature (2 Pet. 1:4; cf. Lev. 2:4-5), and we are incorporated with Him, coinhering with Him as the mutual abode of God and man (John 14:23; 15:5). God is in us and we are in God. God is our dwelling place and we are His dwelling place.*

The verses above present our New Testament Christian life today and they also speak of New Jerusalem. The Lord’s word in John 15, “Abide in Me and I in you” will eventually include all God’s Old Testament people and continue eternally. In New Jerusalem we will be the wife of Christ and we will abide in Christ; He will be our Husband and He will abide in us.
