New Jerusalem is a Mutual Indwelling

John says about New Jerusalem, “I saw no temple in it, for the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb are its temple” (Rev. 21:22).

New JerusalemSince God and the Lamb are the temple, They cannot dwell in it, and it is not Their dwelling place. Rather, it is the dwelling place of all the redeemed saints….On the one hand, the New Jerusalem, which is composed of all the redeemed saints, as the habitation of God, is the tabernacle [Rev. 21:3]; on the other hand, the New Jerusalem, which is constituted of the processed Triune God, as the dwelling place of all the redeemed saints, is the temple. Therefore, the New Jerusalem is the mutual dwelling of both the redeeming God and His redeemed.*

In John 14:19 the Lord told the disciples before His crucifixion, “Yet a little while and the world beholds Me no longer, but you behold Me; because I live, you also shall live.” After this “little while” (in the tomb) the disciples saw Him again and they lived because He breathed the Holy Spirit into them (20:22).

Then He said, “In that day you will know that I am in My Father, and you in Me, and I in you” (14:20). His resurrection was the beginning of the mutual indwelling of God and the believers.

This mutual indwelling is in resurrection and is eternal. In New Jerusalem it is the Triune God as the temple for all His people and His people as the tabernacle for the Triune God.
