New Jerusalem is Spiritual, Heavenly, and Divine (2)

An angel showed John the New Jerusalem and through John’s writing of Revelation 21–22 this city has also been revealed to us..

We know that the Bible contains the divine revelation; the conclusion of such a revelation, therefore, should be very high and very significant….The New Jerusalem is altogether a spiritual, heavenly, and divine sign and not something physical.*

The prior post emphasizes the spiritual nature of New Jerusalem. John tells us that he saw New Jerusalem “coming down out of heaven from God” (Rev. 21:2, 10). This confirms the New Jerusalemheavenly and divine nature of New Jerusalem.

Although New Jerusalem is from God and is heavenly, we should not expect it to be a strange place to us. Rather, for our current Christian life the Lord Jesus exhorted us to abide in Him as He abides in us (John 15:4). This mutual abiding corresponds to and grows to the mutual abiding of God and man in New Jerusalem.

By believing into the Lord Jesus, we receive the divine, eternal life (John 3:15-16). We also become partakers of the divine nature (2 Pet. 1:4). These blessings are for today and are also the essence of heavenly and divine New Jerusalem.

A physical city does not correspond with the heavenly and divine source of New Jerusalem, and it is in no way comparable to the life and nature which characterize the city. New Jerusalem is the culmination of our growing up into Christ and His rich supply to us for the building up of His Body in love.
