New Jerusalem Seen in Ephesians, 13
We continue into Ephesians 4 to look at parallels with these verses and New Jerusalem. Some things near the beginning of this chapter have no counterpart in the new creation since everything negative will go into the lake of fire in Revelation 20 before New Jerusalem is “coming down out of heaven from God.”
Verse 4:3 encourages us to be “diligent to keep the oneness of the Spirit in the uniting bond of peace.” Diligence is needed today because of the fallen, natural man and the forces of evil resist the oneness in Spirit. But in New Jerusalem we will have absolute oneness, the flow of the Spirit, and eternal peace.
Verse 4:4 puts “one Body” first among the seven items of oneness. In one Spirit we were all baptized into one Body (1 Cor. 12:13) and today in Christ we are one Body (Rom. 12:5). This oneness, together with all God’s Old Testament people, will continue into New Jerusalem.
There will certainly be the one Triune God there, the Spirit (4:4), the Lord (4:5), and the God and Father (4:6). The center of New Jerusalem is “the throne of God and of the Lamb” with the “river of water of life,” the Spirit, proceeding out of it.
