Not everyone is doing IT…
As I was getting ready for work this morning, the Bible story about Elisha complaining to God about him being the only one in Israel who haven’t bowed to Baal came to me. What resounded in my head was God’s reply.
Yet I have left me seven thousand in Israel, all the knees which have not bowed unto Baal, and every mouth which hath not kissed him.
1 Kings 19:18
We live in a world where sometimes it seems like everyone is doing IT and we are the only ones not doing IT. This I admit can be pretty lonesome especially when we begin to feel pressured to do IT. What is the IT you ask? The IT is all the things you know you shouldn’t be doing for various reasons whether they are societal or personal reasons.
Let me use myself as an example. On my 12th birthday I promised God (I wasn’t a Christian) that I would only give my virginity to my husband. Now you all know that 12 is right before you hit high school. About a year after I started high school I met a guy. He was a marvelous individual and I thought myself in love and wanted to break my vow. I wanted to offer an “everything included” package to this guy. My argument to myself was that everyone was doing IT. This, we all know, was not exactly true. I remember shortly after I started leaning to the decision a friend of mine divulged how she had tried it and how much it hurt and for me that was the end of that line of musing. I decided there and then that if I’m gonna hurt even a little bit, it might as well be with someone who loves me enough to claim me as his own forever. It’s a decision I haven’t regretted since. In a few weeks I will be 23 and I’m still holding on to my cookie (had to throw in the Steve Harvey reference).
So if you drink yourself in a stupor every time you go out because everyone is doing IT, that’s just plain stupidity. If you experimenting with drugs because everyone is doing IT, guess what it’s not sexy when you all up in somebody’s face and the drugs dripping from your nostril or the weed on your breath! If you are partying every night because everyone is doing IT yet you want to accomplish your goals in 5 years, God help you. Whatever you, ensure you do IT for you and not for the simple reason that everyone is doing IT. If that’s the only reason, you are like sheep: where one goes the others follow…and this is what happens to sheep with that mentality….
Frankly if I’m going to be destroyed, I’d rather do IT on my terms and not because everyone is doing IT. Even if your friends see your terms as the opportunity to tell you that by the time you get marry your husband gonna need a broom to clean up the cobwebs..lol
