One New Man in Christ

New JerusalemThe new man was created by Christ on the cross (Eph. 2:15); we have put off our old man and put on this new man, but we still need the inward renewing (Col. 3:9-10).

Colossians 3:11 says much about the constitution of the new man. “Where [in the new man] there cannot be Greek and Jew, circumcision and uncircumcision, barbarian, Scythian, slave, free man, but Christ is all and in all.”

Mankind rebelled against God at Babel and said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city and a tower whose top is in the heavens; and let us make a name for ourselves” (Gen. 11:4). In judgement, God scattered them and gave them many different languages. This is the root of all the nations and tribes today.

But, the praise of the Lamb in Revelation 5:9 declares “You were slain and have purchased for God by Your blood men out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation.” He has redeemed us out of every division of the old man to create us in Himself as the one new man. Thus Colossians 3:11 says in the new man there cannot be all these distinctions.

It does not say there should not be but cannot be. In the new man and later in New Jerusalem there is no national, social, or language separation. Whenever we are conscious of these distinctions it means we are not living in the reality of the new man; as such we need the renewing! Lord, fully renew our thinking to match Your creating!
