Pastor Adeboye on Serving God and Mammon

In Hebrews 12:1, God commands us to run the Christian race with patience. One reason many find it difficult to be patient is because they see themselves more perfect than the next fellow. The root of impatience is pride just as humility is the mother of patience. The One we should look up to is described as the Lamb. Generally, people view the lamb as a dumb or stupid animal. But in John 10:1-5, Jesus says the sheep hears His voice and therefore do not follow strangers. This means they are not as stupid as many think. The goat thinks it is very smart and clever. With all its wits, it is the goat that ends up in the pepper soup pot. How often do you hear of sheep pepper soup? But goat pepper soup is available anytime.

Are you in the race to Heaven? Be very careful. You are under secret surveillance. People are secretly noting your actions, words, reactions, relations with people, commitment to promises and vows and general character. It is possible for the one in the Christian race to be weighed down. Mark 4:18-19 lists possible weights on believers as the deceitfulness of riches and the cares of this world. Do you know riches deceive its owner? This is why you must not allow the love of money in your heart.

There are some very committed Christians who were quite exemplary in character and commitment while they were waiting for their financial breakthrough. But after it came, they could barely attend church meetings.

No time to pray or study the Bible. They are too busy to evangelize. They are now pursuing money. Once you start making money, if care is not taken, you will always desire and work towards making more and more and more. A time comes that all you live for is just to make more money! This is part of the deceit of riches. Similarly, you would want to join the clubs and associations the rich belong to.

Before long, you would find yourself doing what they do – drinking, smoking, unfaithfulness to your spouse, etc. Soon, God is abandoned for the god of money – Mammon. Drop that weight! You have been bought with the most expensive blood. You are different. Don’t allow worldly weights to stop your heavenly race!

Father, do not allow any wealth, opening or opportunity that will derail me from my Heaven-bound trip, to come my way.
