Releasing Shame From Parenting - School Choices - Denise Pass

Shame RX: Parents are not in a popularity contest.

Proverbs 22:6

“Train up a child in the way he should go, Even when he is old he will not depart from it.”

Parents have a tough job – one of the toughest jobs ever. To raise the next generation to know and love  the LORD. One hitch—every inkling in that next generation does not want to seek God. (You know – there is no one good, no not one). Add to that the fact that our own hearts are deceitful, and yeah, this is not easy.

So training our children is a daunting task. Especially when it comes to education. I home educated from 1997 to well, now. And I am so thankful for every moment I got to spend with my children. But for my youngest, I realized that if I stuck with home education, it was not the best plan for him, for several reasons and God confirmed the decision.

It is hard to change direction, but when we seek God, He leads us. Yet, we can still deal with false guilt or shame for our decisions if we are looking for agreement from everyone. Parents aren’t called to be popular—just faithful to raise their children for the LORD’s glory.

As a mom with four in college, I can now look back on decisions I made and thank God for His mercy and for the incredible grace He gave me to homeschool my four oldest all the way through. How great is our God!!! But I cannot take one ounce of the glory, nor an I take one ounce of the shame when things did not go as planned.

Letting go of public opinion is a beautiful decision that frees us to make even wiser choices in the future.

Shame Off You, friends!
