Resting in His Love: A Mother's Perspective
“Could I hold you?” my toddler asked, lifting his arms toward me, knowing I would always say yes. He knew that every time, no matter if it was because he was tired, scared, upset, sick, or just wanted to be near me and feel the warmth of my embrace, he knew I would pick him up and hold him. The feeling of those baby snuggles is unparalleled. I am convinced that if a pharmaceutical company could replicate the body’s response to that, there would be no need for medication.
Now, that same little boy towers over me, and I see the same sweet need for comfort in his own child. She gives her mama and papa the full benefit of every sweet, and sometimes sticky embrace.
It doesn’t matter if that baby is smelly, sick, or muddy, if she puts out her arms to be held, she will always receive a warm and gentle embrace.
God our father is always waiting with open arms to hold us. We can raise our hearts and hands to Him, and He will hold us as a mother holds her child. He knows our every thought. He captures our tears in a bottle, and every one of them is precious to Him. It doesn’t matter the reason: grief, joy, frustration, celebration, or just a need to be close to Him, He will ALWAYS hold us.
Our children’s total dependence on us can be overwhelming at times. But God’s purpose for His children is total dependence on Him, and our needs are never overwhelming to Him, no matter how snotty or whiny we may be.
I know how much joy and peace it gave me to have my babies lay their heads down on my shoulder and rest in my love. I cannot fathom what joy it brings to our Father in heaven when we lay our head on His shoulder, breathe in His comfort, and rest in His love.
And He invites us to do just that.
“Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” – Matthew 11:28-29 (ESV)
Questions for Reflection:
- Do you have times when you are puzzled by your own emotions? God knows what is wrong and He wants to comfort you.
- Do you feel like you can’t share all of your burdens, frustration, or anger with Him because you don’t want to bother Him with your cares? We are told to cast ALL our cares on Him for He cares for us.
- This week, take time to physically or spiritually ‘rest’ in God’s embrace – whether through prayer, worship, or simply pausing to acknowledge His presence.
