Salvation unto New Jerusalem (2A)
God’s salvation has justified us, forgiven our sins, and regenerated us with His eternal life. This is the first stage of salvation but there is much more. Romans 5:10 hints of this by stating, “much more we will be saved in His life.”
Although we have been saved, we still have the problems of indwelling sin, being attracted by the world, and living for ourselves. We need the much more salvation of Romans 5. This is the second stage of God’s full salvation.
The progressing stage: …In this stage God is freeing us from the dominion of indwelling sin — the law of sin and of death — by the law of the Spirit of life, through the subjective working of the effectiveness of the death of Christ in us (Rom. 6:6-7; 7:16-20; 8:2); sanctifying us by His Holy Spirit (Rom. 15:16), with His holy nature, through His discipline (Heb. 12:10) and His judgment in His own house (4:17); causing us to grow in His life (1 Cor. 3:6-7).*
This on-going salvation is not accomplished by our determination nor by our striving. It comes from the Spirit of life who is in us. We cooperate by turning our heart to the Lord to partake of the freedom of the Spirit (2 Cor. 3:16-17). If we forget to turn, God might allow circumstances which motivate us to turn (Heb. 12:10).
Therefore while we are “receiving an unshakable kingdom, let us have grace” (Heb. 12:28) on our path to New Jerusalem, the eternal kingdom.
