Seeing Isn't Always Believing

Seeing Isn’t Always Believing

Can you see, friends? Really see? We are all born spiritually blind because of Adam’s sin. Pride blinds us to seeing our need. Fear blinds us from seeing our all-powerful God and our mindset, fixed on our glory, blinds us from seeing God’s. Seeing isn’t always believing. But we can be healed by the word of God.

Bible Reading of the Day: John 9-10

Today we are back in the Gospel of John today and there is so much to learn from Jesus’ 6th miracle—healing of a blind man. Seeing isn’t always believing. The Pharisees think the man was born in sin because he was physically blind, but they don’t recognize that they themselves were born in sin. We all were.

Scripture of the day: John 9:2-3

“2 His disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” 3 “Neither this man nor his parents sinned,” Jesus answered. “This came about so that God’s works might be displayed in him. 4 We must do the works of him who sent me while it is day. Night is coming when no one can work.”

Seeing Isn’t Always Believing—Our Perspective Blinds Us

In our spiritual blindness, we see the world around us from our perspective. We think this world is about us, but it is about Jesus. All that happens in this world and to us is all about God being displayed in us. Being man-centered blinds us spiritually. Blindness isn’t always physical. Friends, do we recognize that there is nothing good in us apart from Jesus? Do we see that we don’t see apart from the grace of God? As our eyes are opened, we can see the resistance to the things of God are all around us.

Seeing Isn’t Always Believing—Sin Blinds Us

Reading from John 9:24-34 we see that seeing isn’t always believing. People can be in the very presence of God and still be blind to spiritual realities all around us.

24 So a second time they summoned the man who had been blind and told him, “Give glory to God. We know that this man is a sinner.” 25 He answered, “Whether or not he’s a sinner, I don’t know. One thing I do know: I was blind, and now I can see!” 26 Then they asked him, “What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?” 27 “I already told you,” he said, “and you didn’t listen. Why do you want to hear it again? You don’t want to become his disciples too, do you?” 28 They ridiculed him: “You’re that man’s disciple, but we’re Moses’s disciples. 29 We know that God has spoken to Moses. But this man—we don’t know where he’s from.”

Seeing Isn’t Always Believing—Pride Blinds Us

30 “This is an amazing thing!” the man told them. “You don’t know where he is from, and yet he opened my eyes. 31 We know that God doesn’t listen to sinners, but if anyone is God-fearing and does his will, he listens to him. 32 Throughout history no one has ever heard of someone opening the eyes of a person born blind. 33 If this man were not from God, he wouldn’t be able to do anything.” 34 “You were born entirely in sin,” they replied, “and are you trying to teach us?” Then they threw him out.”

Seeing Isn’t Always Believing—Deception Blinds Us

This will be the challenge as we are blessed to see and understand God’s word. We will be met with rejection and resistance. In John 10, Jesus describes Himself as the Good Shepherd. The Pharisees once again are resisting the truth in John 10:19-20

19 Again the Jews were divided because of these words. 20 Many of them were saying, “He has a demon and he’s crazy. Why do you listen to him?” 21 Others were saying, “These aren’t the words of someone who is demon-possessed. Can a demon open the eyes of the blind?”

Friends, we were all born under a curse—because of Adam’s sin. But the curse has been removed by Jesus Christ so we can now see. The enemy of our souls seeks to discourage and deceive us. To keep us blind. We see when we read God’s word and ask the Holy Spirit to reveal His truth to us.

Application

  • We see when we read God’s word and ask the Holy Spirit to help us see.
  • We will be met with resistance and rejection as we seek to try and help others to see.
  • What is blinding us today? We don’t have to stay blind. God wants to open our eyes. It might be that our desires blind us from God’s will, or others try to blind us by deceiving us.
  • We will meet with rejection and resistance as we try to help others see. Blindness is stubborn.
  • Ask God to remove the blinders so you can see and understand the spiritual realities all around you.
