Seeking God's Wisdom: Unearthing the Hidden Treasure
This was a treasure hunt of epic proportions, at least to me it was. The diamond was missing from my engagement ring and was nowhere to be found. Not only was it of significant monetary value to this young married version of myself, but it also had enormous sentimental value.
I strategically examined every crack in the driveway and sidewalk, then in the garage. I was on my hands and knees looking under the edge of the kitchen counter. I disassembled the vacuum cleaner and dug through dust, hair, and who knows what else without success.
While I was very carefully searching for my treasure, I prayed, I concentrated on where it could have been lost, and I realized I was looking in the wrong places but didn’t know where else to consider. As I laid my head down that night, something small and sharp poked me. Yes, I am like the “Princess and the Pea,” but in this case, it was a good thing. I landed right on my lost treasure.
You can bet I was overjoyed, and the next day took my ring in to secure the diamond so it could never be lost again. Now, I regularly have my ring checked to make sure the prongs are holding my treasure safe and secure.
So often in life, we search for wisdom in the wrong places. We watch videos, reels, and Ted Talks. We read books, ask friends, and go to counselors of all sorts. All of these can have merit. But where we start and end our treasure hunts is key to unearthing the wisdom God is standing at the ready to give us in generous portions.
Throughout Scripture, wisdom is equated to a treasure. Romans 11:33a tells us, “Oh the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God…” Colossians 2:3 points us to where the treasure is hidden; “In Him lie hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.” And James 1 tells us that all we need to do is ask for it.
It is true, there is wisdom in the counsel of many (Proverbs 15:22), but even the wisest man who ever lived, first searched for the treasure of wisdom by asking God for it. “ So give your servant a discerning heart to govern your people and to distinguish between right and wrong…The Lord was pleased that Solomon had asked for this.” (I Kings 3:9a, 10).
He holds the key and is the key to the hidden treasure of wisdom. The more we know Him, the more we are guided in our daily treasure hunt for wisdom. We need to seek Him first; look to him before looking to the world for the wisdom we need in every situation and decision. “For the Lord grants wisdom! From His mouth come knowledge and understanding.” (Proverbs 2:6)
Questions for Reflection:
1. Where do you go to gain wisdom?
2. When you ask God for wisdom, do you believe He gives it to you? Ask God for wisdom in the ‘small’ things so you are prepared with faith that He will equip you with the wisdom in the ‘big’ things.
