Sermon on how to stop worrying too much about money

Memorise: “Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof” (Matt 6:34)Read: Matthew 6:31-34

moneyOne day, the Lord asked me, “of all fundamental issues in your life, how many of them did you choose by yourself?” I told Him, ‘Lord, I don’t understand. I think I have done a lot of choosing’. Then He asked, ‘Who chose your dad, mum, place of birth, height, complexion, etc.? Suddenly, you feel you have become grown up and want to choose all by yourself’.Then I realized I was charting the course of independence from the Most High God! The One who had laid the foundation of your life and has taken you this far, says He wants to complete what He started but you say, ‘I know you are God but step aside and let me handle my affairs myself’. That amounts to foolishness! Ephesians 1:3 says, “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ”.In other words, God is saying all your spiritual needs are provided for. It is a settled matter. Why then are you worrying about what to eat, drink, wear, where to school, and who to marry when Jesus promised that if only you can completely depend on Him all these shall be satisfied? (Matthew 6:33).

One problem with Africans is that no matter how wealthy a man is, he never stops acquiring more. Like Oliver Twist, he keeps asking for more money, more houses and estates, more cars and businesses. When asked why, he will say he is acquiring it for his children to inherit after his death. God opened my eyes one day to see the hollowness of such reasoning;

Your prayer should not be: ‘God, when I die, let my children inherit all I left behind’, but ‘Lord, prosper my children to the extent that they do not need anything I have acquired’. I do not want to die and my children will be dragging one another to court to fight over houses, land and other assets. I want them to thank God for my life but also thank God for prospering them too.

From scriptures, the Lord showed me that if my children will follow His footsteps and do His will, He will do far greater for them than He did for me. He showed me that Abraham was great, Isaac was greater but Jacob was exceedingly great. Why worry about what will happen to your children? If they follow Christ’s footsteps they will be greater than you. Just give them a solid foundation in Christ’s and a good education. These are part of your primary responsibilities.

Father, let my peak be the starting point for my children.
