The Art of Letting Go (& Trusting God) – 3 Remedies for An Anxious Heart - This Little Heart of Mine

When it comes to our future, we’ve all got some trust issues. “Letting go” isn’t a natural response for most of us. Instead, we like to chase after a sense of control.

And despite our efforts, we usually get caught up in the what-could-be or worrying over what’s to come. Sigh.

Sound familiar?

Look—I’ll be real with y’all… I’ve been an emotional rollercoaster the last few weeks. The potential lack of job security for this next year has left me wrapped up in anxiousness.

Mid-meltdown some things really hit me. So I thought I’d share what the Lord has been teaching me in light of my situation.

For all you anxious hearts out there, there are some #truths you need to hear when it comes to letting go and trusting God.

1. Prayer will calm our anxious thoughts.

And it will certainly put things into perspective. I’ll admit I’m no drama queen but at times I can go from zero to the worst-case-scenario. Prayer always gives me a quick reality check.

Yes, the struggle is real… but so is our God.

He listens when we call upon Him. In Philippians 4:6, Paul says, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.”

Skip a few lines to verse 19 and you’ll see the promise he then shares, “My God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:19).

Key word here: need. I have to constantly remind myself that what I think I “want” and what I “need” are not always in agreement with one another.

Asking for His continual provision is great, but even better?  An attitude of gratitude for the gifts of today. This will shift our worrisome hearts into recognizing His overwhelming grace for us.

2. In addition to prayer, reading Scripture will uplift our spirits.

Proverbs 12:25 says “Anxiety in a man’s heart weighs him down, but a good word makes him glad”. And what better place to turn than to the life-giving words of the Bible?

If you know me, you know I’m allll about giving and receiving that verbal affirmation!

So while we’re at it, let’s give Matthew 6:31-34 a read for some much needed assurance.

Although I don’t use The Message as my primary Bible (since it’s not a direct translation), I love this paraphrase:

31 What I’m trying to do here is to get you to relax, to not be so preoccupied with getting, so you can respond to God’s giving. 32 People who don’t know God and the way he works fuss over these things, but you know both God and how he works. 33 Steep your life in God-reality, God-initiative, God-provisions. Don’t worry about missing out. You’ll find all your everyday human concerns will be met. 34 Give your entire attention to what God is doing right now, and don’t get worked up about what may or may not happen tomorrow. God will help you deal with whatever hard things come up when the time comes. (Matthew 6:31-34)

3. Lastly, implementing those Bible verses as daily affirmations will speak into our fears over the future.

If I’ve learned anything lately it would be how much I’ve underestimated the power of decreeing His promises.

In times of stress/uncertainty, a great go-to is Isaiah 41:10: “Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”

The next time you find yourself in the midst of chaos, confidently declare: “My God is with me. He will strengthen me. He will guide me.” This reminder was definitely on repeat for me the last week.

The next time you find yourself in the midst of chaos, confidently declare: ‘My God is with me. He will strengthen me. He will guide me.’

Well babe, that’s it! Those are some takeaways I’ve had as-of-late. Please don’t just take my word for it though… go discover God’s peace for yourself through prayer, scripture, and affirmations when you feel the onset of anxiety in your heart.

We are all going to have good chapters and bad chapters. We’re going to have times when we think, I do not like this story and other times we think, I do like this story. The key is to not get stuck in life’s difficult chapters but keep moving to the flow of the Author’s pen. God is still writing your story.Father, some chapters of my story that are so difficult. However, I know You can use all the broken pieces to make a magnificent masterpiece. Help me not get stuck in a bad chapter due to disappointment or discouragement, but to keep moving forward, knowing there is more to be written. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.Where are you right now?
