The Crisis of Faith: What Does it Mean to Be a Christian in Nigeria Today?

My upcoming novel, "Unwavering Faith," explores the challenges faced by a Christian family whose children begin to question the very foundations of their beliefs. While fictional, the story reflects a reality I see around me every day here in Nigeria. The blurb reads: "How do you hold on to faith when everything around you is falling apart? Kunle and Bimbo Ayoola built their lives on faith—unyielding, steadfast, and unshaken by the trials of the world. But when their children begin questioning the very beliefs that shaped their home, the couple is thrust into an unexpected battle—not just for their family’s unity, but for the very essence of their convictions. As modern influences, personal struggles, and unforeseen crises pull their children in different directions, Kunle and Bimbo must confront a painful truth: faith is not inherited, it is chosen. And sometimes, the ones we love must walk through the fire before finding their way back. A gripping and emotional exploration of love, faith, and the shifting tides of family, "Unwavering Faith" is a story of devotion tested, beliefs challenged, and the courage it takes to embrace change without losing oneself." Recently, I was discussing the state of our nation with an acquaintance, and he suggested that success in Nigeria today requires dabbling in voodoo. This sentiment, along with the stories I hear from my wife – a civil servant surrounded by colleagues who claim to be Christian yet engage in occult practices – paints a troubling picture. Even prominent figures like Governor Chukwuma Soludo have expressed concern over the rise of traditional religion in the South East, a region historically considered a Christian stronghold. So, what does it truly mean to be a Christian in Nigeria today? It means more than just attending church or claiming a Christian identity. It means: 1. Defending the Faith with Grace and Truth In an age of social media, we are constantly bombarded with arguments against Christianity, with some even romanticizing a return to traditional religions. We must be prepared to defend our faith, not with anger or condemnation, but with grace, truth, and a deep understanding of the transformative power of the Gospel. We must be ready to articulate how Christianity brought enlightenment, progress, and a moral compass to our nation. 2. Living with Uncompromising Integrity The corruption that plagues our society has sadly infiltrated the Church. We can no longer afford to be Christians in name only. We must be known for our integrity, honesty, and uprightness in all our dealings. This requires a daily commitment to living out the principles of Scripture, even when it's difficult or unpopular. 3. Becoming Agents of Change Instead of bemoaning the darkness around us, we must become beacons of light. This means actively working to combat corruption, injustice, and inequality in our communities. It means using our influence, however large or small, to promote righteousness and positive change. 4. Rediscovering the Power of Authentic Faith Perhaps the greatest challenge we face is the temptation to compromise our faith for the sake of convenience or worldly gain. We must rediscover the power of an authentic, unwavering faith that is rooted in a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. This means spending time in prayer, studying the Word, and seeking the guidance of the Holy Spirit. The situation in Nigeria is a wake-up call. It's a call to examine our hearts, renew our commitment to Christ, and become the Christians we are called to be: a people of unwavering faith, uncompromising integrity, and transformative influence. The time for lukewarm Christianity is over. It's time to rise up and be the light of the world.
