The Divine and Mystical Romance in Song of Songs
The prior posts have specific verses about the divine and mystical romance in the Bible. This romance is the central theme of Song of Songs. An introductory footnote to Song of Songs says:
Song of Songs is a history of love in an excellent marriage, a story of the love between the wise King Solomon, the writer of this book, and the Shulammite (v. 6:13). a girl of the countryside. As such, this book is a marvelous and vivid portrait, in poetic form, of the bridal love between Christ as the Bridegroom and His lovers as His bride (John 3:29-30; Rev. 19:7) in their mutual enjoyment in the mingling of His divine attributes with the human virtues of His lovers.*
Solomon going to the countryside to court a girl is a picture of God becoming the man Jesus to court mankind. The story is of mutual love from beginning (1:2, 7) to end (8:6-7). The ups and downs of this relationship portray the different experiences we have in our Christian life. Eventually, in the last verse of Song of Songs she is eagerly awaiting the Lord’s second coming.
The name Shulammite in Song of Songs 6:13 is the feminine form of Solomon, indicating that through the multiple interactions presented in Song of Songs she has become His counterpart, matching Him. This is expressed in the New Testament by “Christ is formed in you” (Gal. 4:19) and our being “conformed to the image of His Son” (Rom. 8:29).
This wonderful couple is a picture of Christ and the New Jerusalem.
