The Kingdom of God; Living “to the Lord”
Romans 14:1-6 speak about eating and regarding days. These verses say definitely that whether we eat all foods or only eat some foods, we should eat “to the Lord.” These verses also exhort us whether we esteem one day of the week special or all days equal, we do this “to the Lord.”
Verse 8 summarizes, “For whether we live, we live to the Lord, and whether we die, we die to the Lord. Therefore whether we live or we die, we are the Lord’s.”
Our Christian living today is not focused on what we do or don’t do. We are the Lord’s and we live to Him. The outward actions, as long as they are not idolatrous, not immoral, and not illegal, do not matter. Such living to the Lord today is part of our getting ready for New Jerusalem.
Second Corinthians 5:15 complements this, telling us that Christ “died for all that those who live may no longer live to themselves but to Him who died for them and has been raised.” It is in resurrection that we “live to Him.” His death released us from our old man and His resurrection brought the new creation into us.
The consummation of this new creation is the new heaven and new earth with New Jerusalem, the resurrection city, at the center.
