The Privileged Life: Autumn

“The pastures are clothed with flocks; The valleys also are covered with grain; They shout for joy, they also sing.” Psalm 65:13

Finally—it’s fall, y’all! Finally, finally, after the oppressive heat that has plagued us in the South these past few weeks, scorching our yards and creating dust clouds, we’ve had some cool temperatures. Finally, pumpkins are starting to appear in yards, scarecrows are cropping up on front porches, and leaves are showing an ever-so-slight tinge of red.

Fall is my favorite season, with crisp evenings and clear skies. My grandfather used to say that skies are bluest in October and November, and it’s true. I love the changing colors, bright chrysanthemums, harvest moons, pumpkin spices, and the musty smell of dry leaves raked into piles—I’m so tempted to jump right in!

Two doors down from us, our neighbors have a firepit they enjoy in the evenings. When our windows are open, we are lulled to sleep by the faint drifts of their wood smoke—like camping out, only so much better in our comfortable bed!

As you enjoy this beautiful season, remind yourself that these experiences are beautiful privileges we enjoy briefly. These golden harvest days will soon be replaced by Christmas busyness, snowy days, and the dreariness of late winter.

The apostle Paul admonished the Galatians to persevere, to not grow weary while doing good, to continue to spread the good news about Jesus Christ, knowing that the “harvest” was upon them—“…for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart.” (Galatians 6:9)

So when you hear the crackle of leaves underfoot, step forward with purpose—join in this great celebration of life with the Lord of the Harvest, Jesus Christ. Ask Him to give you an opportunity to share His joy with someone else today!
