The Voice
Reflections in Psalms 29

“Ascribe to the Lord, you heavenly beings, ascribe to the Lord glory and strength. Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name; worship the Lord in the splendour of his holiness.”
Psalms 29:1-2
Voices are unique; voices are loud and soft, deep and high. Voices sing tenor, soprano, alto, and bass. Some voices project like Celine Dion; or hold back like you’re too shy to try to speak or sing. In a recording studio, voices are picked up in all its rawness and sometimes first-time artists may be frightened of their voice.
Sometimes we don’t use our voices like we would like to, for example, our tone might be too harsh, to pitchy and it’s not at all how we’d like to be perceived. People get used to our voice but surprised if we impulsively use our voice through acting or singing or speaking professionally and it sounds elaborate.
If you would sit and listen to how many tones, colourful sounds, whispery hushes you could hear in a singing voice or speaking voice, would you be able to analyse all you hear and perceive?
Some voices make your heart melt because they are voices of people who are closest to you and belong to people you love. Some voices bring you peace, hope and reassurance when trouble strikes you like a hurricane. Sometimes all we need is a reassuring voice to be near and save us.
Have you thought about the voice of God?
He is the creator of our voices, and every sound we hear. He can speak to us, and it can be as clear as day.
In Psalms 29, the Psalmist describes God’s voice. Have you ever thought about that?
In this instance, the voice of the Lord is powerful, majestic and glorious.
The Psalmists understands that the Lord’s voice can break, strike and shake.
The voice of the Lord has the authority, and He is the King over all.
In Revelations, it talks about the voice of God.
“….His voice was like the sound of rushing waters.” Revelations 1:15
When God is speaking to you, what is He saying? Here is a verse from Revelations to consider. Jesus was speaking to the church in Laodicea.
“Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me.” Revelations 3:20
God might sometimes be speaking something specific to you, but do we listen to what He says? Do we recognise Him?
The voice of the Lord is over the waters; the God of glory thunders,
the Lord thunders over the mighty waters.
The voice of the Lord is powerful; the voice of the Lord is majestic.
The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars; the Lord breaks in pieces the cedars of Lebanon.
He makes Lebanon leap like a calf, Sirion like a young wild ox.
The voice of the Lord strikes with flashes of lightning.
The voice of the Lord shakes the desert; the Lord shakes the Desert of Kadesh.
The voice of the Lord twists the oaks and strips the forests bare.
And in his temple all cry, “Glory!” Psalms 29:3-9
God is majestic and mighty, let Him speak to you.
