Three Lives; One is for New Jerusalem (3)

Man is a being of three parts—spirit and soul and body—and God wants to saturate all three. “The God of peace Himself sanctify you wholly, and may your spirit and soul and body be preserved complete, without blame, at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ” (1 Thes. 5:23). This prepares us for New Jerusalem.

When we repent and believe into Jesus Christ, He, the divine life, comes into our spirit. At this time our soul and body still have the corrupted lives from man’s fall into sin and death. But the life we receive into our spirit—Christ Himself—will spread into our soul and our body so that we New Jerusalemwill “be preserved complete, without blame.”

His spreading into our soul is our renewing. His spreading into our body is limited in this age. Romans 8:11 tells us, “He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who indwells you.” This is the foretaste of what will occur when the Lord returns in glory.

Now we are “eagerly awaiting sonship, the redemption of our body” (Rom. 8:23). We are sons of God by regeneration but we are waiting for the full sonship, the full impartation of divine life into our mortal body. Then our whole being will be life, matching New Jerusalem.

New Jerusalem is a city of glory and the redemption of our body completes the saturation of our being with this glory. “We eagerly await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, who will transfigure the body of our humiliation to be conformed to the body of His glory” (Phil. 3:20b-21).
