Unlimited: The Weakness of the Disciples

When they came to the other disciples, they saw a large crowd around them and the teachers of the law arguing with them. As soon as all the people saw Jesus, they were overwhelmed with wonder and ran to greet him.

“What are you arguing with them about?” he asked.

A man in the crowd answered, “Teacher, I brought you my son, who is possessed by a spirit that has robbed him of speech. Whenever it seizes him, it throws him to the ground. He foams at the mouth, gnashes his teeth and becomes rigid. I asked your disciples to drive out the spirit, but they could not” (Mark 9:14–18, NIV).

From the majesty and glory of the transfiguration on the mountain, Jesus walked into the mess and confusion of this world. Because the crowds were waiting for him down below, and there was quite a commotion!

At the base of the mountain, a large crowd was centred around the teachers of the law who argued with the disciples. What were they arguing about? I think we can work it out from the situation.

A man brought his demon-possessed son to be healed by Jesus. But Jesus was on the mountain, so instead the man asked his disciples to heal him.

This was normal in their tradition. If a teacher had power from God, then his disciples would be able to do the things that the teacher did. So, the man expected the disciples to heal the boy. But they couldn’t.

So, the teachers of the law furiously argued with the disciples, that their master, Jesus, was a fraud.

This is really bad. What I mean is, it’s bad when needy people come to see Jesus, but get his disciples instead.

What they should get is that they should see Jesus through his disciples.

But too often, the people around us see just us, with all of our weaknesses and faults.

Eli’s Reflection: What do people see when they see you? Are you building your life on people’s teachings or on the Jesus that lives inside of them?
