Genesis 29 vs 24

²⁴ And Laban gave unto his daughter Leah Zilpah his maid for an handmaid.

1. Jacob fell in love with Rachael, Laban’s daughter, and planned to marry her.
2. Laban agreed to give his daughter Rachael to Jacob on the condition of seven years of service to him.
3. Jacob served Laban for seven years as a form of dowry for Rachael.
4. After Jacob finished the seven years of service, he demanded to marry Rachael.
5. Note the words of Jacob in Genesis 29 vs 21

• Give me my wife
• That I may go unto her.

1. There are several lessons to learn from this verse:

• As the culture specifies, a woman is not your wife until you have performed the customary rites, including dowry payment.
• A lady is not your wife until her parents know your relationship with her and approve of giving her to you in marriage.
• Jacob proudly declared Rachael his wife after these conditions were fulfilled.
• Another lesson is that you are not expected to go to your partner or sleep with her until she becomes your wife.
• Jacob was only interested in going into Rachael after he had performed her customary marriage rites.
• Cohabitation by intending couples is inappropriate.
• There are several incidents of illegal sexual activity taking place, but we must learn to wait until marriage.
• Illicit sex is a sin, if youy are involved plead for forgiveness today in Jesus’ name.
