What a Fellowship

But it is good for me to draw near to God; I have put my trust in the Lord God,
That I may declare all Your works. -- Psalm 73:28 (NKJV)

There is a Friend like none other. My relationship with the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit fills voids, provides answers, and comforts where people fall short. I know the Lord as my Father, Provider, Counselor, Healer, and Way Maker. I seek God because He is faithful, yet I suspect God is faithful because I seek Him. Like my most precious relationships, my fellowship with God transcended from “grateful to know you” into “we’re in this together for the long haul.”

When we first love someone, we can’t get enough of them. They are always on our mind. We look for opportunities to spend time with and please them. However, as years pass, we can unconsciously take their presence in our lives for granted. Sadly, we can also treat our Heavenly Father with this same indifference even as we acknowledge His blessings. Our God deserves better.

Relationships are sustained through mutual effort. God wants to commune with us, but He will not force Himself into our lives. A close relationship with God requires an investment of time that allows us to learn His nature and hear His voice. This doesn’t require a regimented agenda. When we ask, the Holy Spirit leads us into still silent moments where our relationship grows. The time we offer as a sacrifice yields a life with more peace, clarity and wisdom that we can’t find elsewhere. We often pray for answers but fail to allocate adequate time to receive them.

As the old hymn lyrics profess, “He walks with me and talks with me and tells me I am His own.” Still, this is only possible when we allow our Father the opportunity to do so.

Questions for Reflection:

1. What changes can you make to prioritize time with God?

2. Are you practicing religion or pursuing a relationship?
