What can the Holy Spirit do

Most of us know what Jesus Christ did for us on the cross, but not all understand why He had to leave the Holy Spirit with us when He returned to heaven.

John 14:16 says Jesus would ask the Father to give us another Helper so that He may be with us forever.

In other words, the Holy Spirit is our helper. How can He help us, then? What do we need His help for?

As we live in the daily battle, God knows we cannot do it alone. Thus, He sent the Holy Spirit.

Knowing the works of the Holy Spirit would help us understand how God never leaves or forsake us in all seasons of life.

What can the Holy Spirit do

The Holy Spirit is a member of the Godhead. He bears witness to Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ.

For us to serve the Lord efficiently, it is vital to learn to listen and obey the promptings of the Holy Spirit.

Let us learn what He can do in us and how He can help us as we wait for the second coming of Jesus Christ.

He is our Helper

“But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.” - John 14:26

As Jesus Christ returns to the Father, the Holy Spirit will teach us to obey God’s command. Also, He is there to remind us of everything Jesus taught us.

We, humans, tend to forget things, especially when we face great trials. Also, some of us take God’s words for granted when we experience good things.

However, through the help of the Holy Spirit, we will constantly be reminded of our purpose and identity when we accept Jesus Christ.

More so, we do not let pride go on our way, thinking we already know everything we must understand as Christians. The work of the Holy Spirit is to teach us more about how we could imitate Jesus Christ to gain favor from God.

He convicts our sins

“Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment” - John 16:7-8

The work of the Holy Spirit is to prove the sin, righteousness, and judgment of the world. The Holy Spirit is sovereign to know even those who hide their sins.

Have you ever felt guilty about doing something even if no one knows but you?

That is the role of the Holy Spirit. He convicts our hearts from the wrongdoings we make because He is all-knowing, so we cannot hide from God.

Additionally, the Holy Spirit helps us to confess our sins and ask for forgiveness from our Heavenly Father.

He fills us and lives in us

“And the disciples were filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit.” - Acts 13:52

As Christians, we are not always happy, but the Holy Spirit is there to fill our emptiness. He dwells in us so we would not feel alone.

No matter how painful or difficult our struggles are, we can still rejoice and live in peace because of the Holy Spirit.

As He lives in us, we would be confident that God is always with us and that all things work together for the good of those who love Him.

He gives revelations, wisdom, and power

The Scripture says if God is with us, who can be against us? (Romans 3:31)

The Holy Spirit makes it possible for us to win over temptations and turbulence in life. He gives us understanding, wisdom, and the ability to be conquerors.

“These things God has revealed to us through the Spirit. For the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God. For who knows a person's thoughts except the spirit of that person, which is in him? So also, no one comprehends the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God.  - 1 Corinthians 2:10-11

Jesus Christ sent the Holy Spirit to help us understand God more. The Holy Spirit is God’s spirit, so He knows God’s thoughts and reveals them to those who believe in Him.

Moreover, the Holy Spirit opens our eyes to hope in salvation and our inheritance in Jesus.

Also, as we serve Him, He knew that we would need the power to carry out our purpose to witness the ends of the earth.

Furthermore, through the Holy Spirit, we would have the wisdom to know what pleases the Lord from what is not. He gives us enlightenment so we can live righteously.

He leads us to all truth

“When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come.” - John 16:13

As we wait for the return of Jesus Christ, there will be many deceits and lies that could influence our faith. These are schemes of satan to lure and lead God’s people away from the truth.

However, we have nothing to fear because as the Holy Spirit dwells in us, He will guide us into all the truth and even reveal things that are yet to come.

Sometimes, we become wanderers despite accepting Jesus Christ because of many problems.

With the help of the Holy Spirit, He would always guide us back to the truth of our identity in Jesus Christ.

He is a seal

“In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit.” - Ephesians 1:13

In ancient times, a seal was used as a “legal signature” to attest ownership and validation of what was sealed.

The Holy Spirit is our mark of God’s adoption to us to become His children. If we still doubt our salvation, the Holy Spirit is our confidence. He guarantees our inheritance in heaven as God has adopted us.

Thus, we should never question our validity in God because He gives the Holy Ghost to seal our identity in Him.

Just like making a deposit or a down payment on a new house to ensure no one else would get it, the Holy Spirit is a deposit in our lives, confirming our validation that we belong to Jesus.

He is our great intercessor

“Likewise, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.” - Romans 8:26-27

Knowing that the Lord, the Holy Spirit Himself, intercedes for us feels so good. Intercede means to act on behalf of someone in difficulty or trials by pleading or petition.

Also, to attempt to reconcile differences between two people or groups or mediate.

The Holy Spirit pleads to our Heavenly Father on behalf of us so we can overcome trials. This mediates when we do not understand God, so we can still trust Him.

Whenever we are weak, He helps us renew our strength and rest in the presence of God.

Besides, we can never be defeated because the Holy Spirit is with us.

Invite the Holy Spirit

We need the Holy Spirit to acquire the characters of Jesus Christ. He is a great helper that we should not underestimate.

Thus, let us invite the Holy Spirit to dwell continuously as we wait for the Lord. As the Holy Spirit lives in us, we would enjoy God's presence and amazing love for us.
