When the Doors Close, the Church Grows: Praying for Algeria

Algeria. Nearly every Protestant church — closed. Not because the congregations left, not because the faith died out. Because the government methodically shut them down, one by one, using permit laws that are basically impossible to comply with. You fix what they tell you to fix, and they still don't reopen the doors. It's not really about permits. Everyone knows that. What got me, though — and I mean really stopped me — is that the church is *growing* there. More people are becoming Christians in Algeria, not fewer. Former Muslims, gathering in homes, in fields, someone called them "churches under olive trees." That phrase just stuck with me. I don't know why I expected persecution to be more... effective. Like, if you close enough buildings, the faith goes away. But that's not what's happening. And honestly, it shouldn't surprise me. It's basically the plot of Acts 8. Anyway. I didn't want to just read the article and move on. So I prayed. This is what came out. --- ## A Prayer for Algeria Heavenly Father, Though we are separated by distance and have never met face to face, I come before Your throne today to lift up our brothers and sisters in Algeria. They are Your children, and so am I — and that makes us family. So I cannot remain silent. Father, I ask that Your Holy Spirit would cover them with Your protection. Guard them from the persecution they face — the closed churches, the arrests, the court cases brought against pastors who did nothing more than gather Your people in Your name. You are their refuge and their strength, a very present help in trouble. Be that for them today. Lord, Your Son said that those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake are blessed, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. I hold onto that promise now on their behalf. What the authorities mean for harm, You are turning for good — for even as the doors of churches are being shut, Your church in Algeria is growing. People are coming to faith. They are gathering in homes, in open fields, under olive trees. Father, that is Your doing, and it is marvelous in our eyes. We confess before You that the body of Christ cannot be destroyed. Because Christ is risen, His church lives — in Algeria as much as anywhere else on this earth. No law, no ordinance, no locked door has power over the life that is in Him. So we ask, Father — grant Your people there bold and unwavering faith. Grant them a peace that surpasses all understanding, standing guard over their hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. Bless the church that is quietly, faithfully growing in that land. And we pray for the day — Lord, may it come soon — when Your people in Algeria are free to worship You openly, to sing Your praise without fear, and to proclaim the gospel with liberty. Move in the hearts of those in authority. Let religious freedom come to Algeria. Until that day, be their shelter and their song.
