When Trusting God Is Hard
Perhaps you’re not a Christian yet, but you’re not sure why. You’ve heard convincing reasons to trust Christ as your Savior, but for some reason you can’t say the sinner’s prayer (repenting of your sins and accepting Jesus’ death on the cross as payment for them) … at least not yet.
Somewhere deep inside, you want to believe, but something from your past makes trusting God hard. A heartbreak so profound that you’re struggling to recover. An event so devastating that you wonder, “If God is real, why didn’t He do something to stop it?”
As the years went on, books, online posts and other messages confirmed your belief that God was only a myth.
Or maybe someone you trust betrayed you. Worse, someone who claimed to be a Christian behaved so un-Christlike that it turned you away from the One they said they followed. For this, I am truly sorry. This reason for your unbelief especially hurts my heart.
Some of you once believed, but faith seemed to have failed you.
You prayed for healing that didn’t come. You lost a job, a home, a loved one. You look at wars, floods, famine and wonder how any of this makes sense in a “God is good” world.
I won’t deny that these issues are real. Difficult. Painful. And often unexplainable.
Others of you ask, “Why?” “Why would Jesus waste His time on me? Why would He love me, let alone die for me?”
Knowing the truth matters, and since not knowing it will affect your eternity, I’d like to try to answer your questions, praying as I do. I’m praying that by the end of our conversation, you will come to believe – at least enough to consider the possibility that God is real and that He loves you.
Can we agree that the actual question is: Is God worthy of your trust? Is He what He says He is? Is He Who He says He is?
Next week, I’ll do my best to answer some of these objections. We’ll talk about a God Who loves you so much that He cares about everything you care about. A God Who hates the thought of you spending even one minute in hell, let alone all eternity, that He gave His life … for you. A God Who is worthy of your trust.
