White Magic, Black Magic, and the Power of God

Magic has always been a topic of fascination and intrigue for centuries. It entices our curiosity about the unknown, the extraordinary, and the supernatural. However, as believers, it is essential to discern the source of supernatural power and understand the implications of engaging with it. In this article, we will explore the concept of magic from a biblical perspective and distinguish between its two sources: God and Satan.

As believers, we must acknowledge there are only two sources of supernatural power clearly revealed in the Bible – the power of God and the power of Satan. There are no other sources. It is crucial to understand that there is no difference between white magic and black magic; it is all simply magic. We are told that white magic is meant to do good things for people, and black magic is used for harm, like putting curses on people. But all forms of magic, regardless of their intent, originate from the same demonic source. Sooner or later, even white magic comes back to bite the user.

Satan himself is a created being. He is not a creator. All he can do is manipulate and distort what God has already created. There was no such thing as magic and witchcraft until Satan got kicked out of heaven! What we have come to know as paranormal activity, such as paranormal extrasensory perception (ESP), or clairvoyance, seeing ghosts, poltergeists, life after death, or talking to the dead, faith healing, and so forth.

Compare these activities to the gifts of the Spirit as mentioned in 1 Corinthians 12.

  • ESP or Clairvoyance and psychic readings — counterfeits of Words of Knowledge and words of Wisdom
  • Seeing ghosts–counterfeit of discerning of spirits
  • Faith healing — counterfeits of the gifts of healings and the gift of faith
  • Magic — a poor counterfeit and low-level form of the working of miracles

Any miraculous supernatural power that does not originate from our Heavenly Father can only come from Satan. Satan’s power is deceptive. As Christians, we should be skilled in discerning of spirits to know what sources are behind these paranormal activities.

As children of light, believers are called to walk in the power of God and reject the fruits of darkness. We have access to the genuine supernatural power of the living God, which far surpasses anything Satan can offer. The divine power of God is not mere magic; it transcends human comprehension and is grounded in love, righteousness, and truth. The gifts of the Spirit are never used to put curses on anyone or do something bad to them. They are used to bless, edify, comfort, and encourage the one receiving them.

Interestingly, most magic-related activities, such as seances and Halloween, are associated with darkness and often take place at night. Of course, there are always exceptions. But this connection between magic and darkness is not a coincidence. As children of the light, believers are called to have no fellowship with darkness or the fruits of darkness.

What Fellowship Does Light Have with Darkness?

“Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?” (2 Corinthians 6:14 KJV)

It is our responsibility to educate ourselves and our children about the dangers and counterfeit nature of magic. And don’t be fooled by these activities highlighted in various forms of entertainment in our movies, books, tv shows, video games, etc.. Think about the following scripture:

“And many of those who had practiced magical arts collected their books and began burning them in front of everyone.” (Act 19:19) And when they were done all the new Christ followers went out and watched a Harry Potter movie together because it was only make-believe magic….I DON’T THINK SO!!!!

Recognizing the significance of this issue, I wrote a curriculum called “God’s Supernatural Kingdom.” It was developed to help children understand the distinction between God’s kingdom of light and Satan’s kingdom of darkness. By teaching the truth about God’s gifts and the fallacies of paranormal activities, we equip our children to discern and choose the path of light.

The curriculum “God’s Supernatural Kingdom” delves into the nine gifts of the Spirit, shedding light on their genuine purpose and contrasting them with the counterfeit manifestations seen in paranormal activities. This valuable resource is not only suitable for individual devotion but also serves as an excellent tool for Sunday school classes or children’s church. Its insights provide adults with a deeper understanding of supernatural power and equip them to guide younger generations.

Paranormal Activity is on the Rise

In our modern Western culture, the normalization of paranormal activities and magic has become increasingly pervasive. Movies, books, and various forms of media often portray and glorify these practices. As believers, it is vital to remain vigilant, guarding ourselves against the subtle allure of magic. Being informed and equipped with biblical knowledge allows us to stand firm against the encroachment of darkness.

Magic is not a form of entertainment or a harmless hobby; it has deep spiritual implications. It is never something to be toyed with or taken lightly. Engaging in magic opens doors to the demonic realm, inviting trouble and spiritual oppression into our lives. God, in His infinite wisdom and love, offers us true and authentic supernatural power. He desires to bless us with His divine power and bring us into His kingdom of light.

As believers, we must discern the source of supernatural power and reject any form of magic that does not originate from God. Magic, whether labeled white or black, is all the same – a counterfeit concoction from the pit of hell. Our identity as children of light calls us to walk in the genuine power of God, filled with the gifts of the Spirit, which are designed to bless and uplift others. By understanding the distinct nature of God’s power and discerning the dangers of magic, we can navigate this topic and lead lives aligned with God’s truth.
