One of my most prized possessions is my mother’s Bible. Shortly after she went to be with the Lord, I was leafing through the well-worn and tear-stained pages. In the margin next to Ephesians 3:20 she had written, “If God is your partner, make your plans large.”

I do not speak of men as My enemies, but the powers behind their masks. For these who feign power are mere puppets of spiritual powers beyond the natural order. It is toward these enemies that My hand is raised and about to come down upon their heads.

Last month, I wrote an article on the life and ministry of Asahel Nettleton. In it, I shared Nettleton’s biography, from his early life through his ministry. Nettleton is an important figure to know from church history because of his desire for the purity of the Gospel to be communicated, especially in evangelism. What do Christians mean by grace? The doctrine of grace results from the doctrine of lordship, referring to the God of Israel in the Old Testament and Jesus of Nazareth in the New Testament.Grace in the Old TestamentIn the Old Testament context, lordship means that the Creator does whatever he chooses to do. “Whatever the Lord pleases, he does, in heaven and on earth, in the seas and all deeps.” (Psalm 135:6). This was not a foreign idea for ancient religions. The gods had power over men, and t
The disciples asked Jesus when the destruction of the temple would occur. Jesus described the trouble and deceptions that are coming upon the world. But now, in this, his most extensive recorded prophetic sermon, what Jesus says next is literally out of this world. Something is going on here. He’s not just talking about the destruction of the temple! Jesus is here quoting the prophet Joel, using imagery that is typical apocalyptic and that is associated with the end of the world. It shows how the evil that people do on earth doesn’t just affect us here on earth, but it disrupts the harmony of the heavens as well – the entire universe. This was illustrated by the way that a supernatural darkness covered the land at the crucifixion of Jesus, and there was a great earthquake at his death.
