Who does God say I am? | Biblical Identity Declarations
I’m so quick to forget my identity. When I say something that I’m not proud of, when I react with stress and anxiety instead of with peace, and when I make quick judgements instead of extending grace, it’s because I’m forgetting who God says I am.
Instead of acting out of the identity God has given me, I’m acting out of my “old self.” (Romans 6:5-7) Sometimes, I think we need to pray and declare God’s truths for our identity over ourselves.
I heard this analogy recently that as followers of Jesus we shouldn’t be reading the temperature, but we should be setting the thermostat. I think this is especially true with our words.
If you aren’t feeling loved, declare God’s Word over yourself that you are loved.
Don’t read the temperature on your identity. Don’t just say you don’t feel like you have a purpose. Instead, declare over yourself that you do have a purpose, and “set the temperature” by declaring God’s identity for you over your life.
Here are 10 Biblical Identity Declaration for you:
I am Chosen
“But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.” 1 Peter 2:9
I am Unique
“If the whole body were an eye, where would the sense of hearing be? If the whole body were an ear, where would the sense of smell be? But in fact God has placed the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be. If they were all one part, where would the body be? As it is, there are many parts, but one body.” 1 Corinthians 12:17-20
I have a Purpose
“For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” Ephesians 2:10
I am Loved
“We love because he first loved us.” 1 John 4:19
I am Cherished
“Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God. Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.” Luke 12:6-7
I am Strong
“For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.” 2 Timothy 1:7
I am Capable
“No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.” Romans 8:37
I am Worthy
“Since you are precious and honored in my sight, and because I love you, I will give people in exchange for you, nations in exchange for your life.” Isaiah 43:4
I am Enough
“But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.” 2 Corinthians 12:9
I am Known
“For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.” Psalm 139:13-14
Let's start believing we are who God says we are, and then live our lives as an outpouring of that identity. Amen?
