Why does God use your brokenness?
“God, why is this happening to me? Why did you let this happen?”
When amid brokenness, we cannot help but question God’s purpose. Most Christians sometimes feel they do not deserve to be in a particular situation because they have been keeping God’s command.
In 2022, I asked God those questions when my brother was not healed of Pneumonia and was taken away from us. We are a family of Believers.
My parents are both in the ministry. My mom is a very passionate in helping others. This was the most devastating experience we had in our entire lives.
Honestly, until now, I still question why God let that happen. However, our faith teaches us to still believe and obey despite not knowing the reason why.
Why God uses your brokenness
Have you ever asked God why He needs to use our brokenness or pain to show who He is?
Sometimes, God would reveal His reasons why He needs us to be broken, but sometimes we do not get all the answers because God’s thoughts and ways are higher than ours.
However, this article will identify some possible reasons why God needs us to be broken for Him to reveal and work in us.
To depend on God
Who needs God when we have everything I need? Do I still need Him if I already have a convenient life and a perfect family?
I bet most people, even Believers, would not need God anymore if they had everything. Our brokenness is an opportunity for God to show us that we need Him.
Besides, our brokenness came from the things we could not control and that only He could manage. Whenever we feel tired, it would always remind us that we need God to strengthen us.
Thus, God is using our pain, worries, and fears for us to rely on Him and need Him in our lives.
A father wants to feel that his children need him so as our Heavenly Father. He wants to think that His people want Him to be part of their lives.
To refine us
If everything seems to go on our way and plans, we tend to become arrogant. We may think that all our success only came from our effort.
Also, imagine if you do not need to wait until you get what you want, then why would you be patient and persevere?
God used our brokenness to refine our character to become like Jesus Christ. We can never be like Jesus Christ if we do not experience hardships in life.
Besides, we cannot be humble enough if we succeed in everything. God uses our failures to help us to be humble and accept our weaknesses.
Our brokenness is an opportunity to be more willing to listen to God and obey His will. Our brokenness makes us realize that we need God to help us successfully fix our relationships with our family and spouse.
Moreover, we are willing to wait patiently when broken as God works in our careers, friendship, and family. It will help us forgive and surrender all our pains to Jesus.
To strengthen our faith
Without trials and turbulences, our faith would not be tested. Our brokenness helps us to hold firmly in God’s promises.
It helps us set our minds and hearts on things above, not our circumstances.
Meanwhile, satan could also use our brokenness to weaken our belief in God. He would put lies in our minds to destroy our faith. However, we will not allow evil schemes to kill us if we have a firm foundation.
Moreover, people with firm faith mainly had proven God’s words and promises amidst their brokenness.
To draw us closer to God
Lost and broken people crave more of God’s presence because the closer they are to God, the more they experience peace and hope.
Psalm 34:18 says, “The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”
God is using our brokenness to make us draw closer to Him. God is willing to comfort us in our dark moments such as in our grief. No one could ever understand our pain more than Jesus.
He experienced the most incredible physical, mental, and emotional torture.
Yet, God never left Him all along, but He could not orchestrate our pain since He is still the God of just. Nevertheless, He never leaves us broken and will redeem our tormented spirit.
More importantly, if we are broken, we are more willing and interested to know who God is and what He can do for us.
The more we discover the truth about God’s character and promises, the more we can trust Him and fall in love with Him.
To testify
God uses people’s brokenness to proclaim how He has helped them overcome. People with great testimony about God’s faithfulness and how they become successful in life experience brokenness.
Additionally, successful people fail many times before reaching their dreams. But those stories of how they rise from falling are used by God to proclaim to others who He is.
If you were not broken, you would not feel God’s presence and how beautiful it is to be with Him.
When you experience Jesus' salvation and tell it to others, people will also believe He is real through your story.
To know your purpose
People who experienced God amidst their brokenness did not just get the healing they longed for but the purpose of their existence. God heals our broken hearts and also helps others recover from their pain.
Some people who struggle with grief are used to comforting those with the same suffering. God uses wives who overcome their resentment toward their cheating husbands to help other wives forgive and let go of their pain.
Furthermore, God uses our brokenness to direct us to His purpose and plan. Without our failure, we may not know that what we want for ourselves is not God’s desire for us.
God did not design us to be broken
To be clear, God’s original purpose for making us humans is to have a relationship with Him. His love is so great and overwhelming that He wants someone to feel it.
God designed our lives to be perfect. This is why He made this world an ideal place to live initially.
However, our brokenness comes from satan. In Genesis 3:1-24, the serpent deceived Eve into eating the fruit from the tree in the middle of the garden. This was the fall of humans and the start of our brokenness.
Our disobedience causes our brokenness, not God. He never wanted us to be taken away from Him, yet humans choose to be separated from Him as He has given us the free will to choose.
As a consequence, the perfect life crafted for us was gone. Now, there is pain and death.
God’s grace and unconditional love
Despite our disobedience, God’s grace and unconditional love still abound. His love is so incredible that He can turn our brokenness into greatness and breakthroughs.
He uses our darkest moments to embrace us and make us feel that He is still there despite our cold and disobedient hearts.
God’s love is so unique that He even sacrificed His only begotten son for us to come near to Him again, especially when we are broken.
Jesus Christ becomes the prize of our sins so that God can still be with us amidst our imperfections, pain, and struggles in this corrupted world.
