Why I Write

I have been writing my whole life in one way or another. As a child, I would scribble short stories in my journal, and later on during my academic career I wrote countless essays, speeches, debate constructives, and even a thesis paper. Today, I write for Classical Conversations.

Most commonly, when I share with people that I am a writer, the question that follows is "What do you write about?" Though this is a natural response, I have recently come to ask myself a more important question, "Why do I write?"

There are many immediate reasons why I might pick up my pen or clack on my keyboard. Sometimes I write to get an idea down on paper, to jot down a poem I am memorizing, to message a friend, to share a historical fact I've just learned, to meet a deadline. These are reasons I have written something just over the past 24 hours! But they are only secondary reasons, and I realized quickly that if I want to be a writer, I first must identify and justify my motives for writing.

Simply put, I write for Truth's sake.

Let me be clear, I do not write because Truth needs me (or anyone) to defend it. Far from it! I write because God Almighty thought it fit to reveal the Truth to me through his Word and, as a Christian, I have the high charge to share it with this fallen world.

Whether I write about politics, culture, or theology, it is my aim to always share Truth, celebrate beauty, and defend goodness, so that the world may know that the LORD is God, and that He will be exalted among the nations and in the Earth (Psalm 46:10).
