Why You Can Trust the Bible — Carol McLeod Ministries

I want you to love the Bible. Not simply to own one or read it occasionally, but to know what it is, why you can trust it, and how it can change your everyday life.

One of the most common objections to Scripture is this: “The Bible contradicts itself.” But does it?

The Bible is a collection of 66 books written across generations by people from different backgrounds, occupations, cultures, and circumstances. And yet, from Genesis to Revelation, it tells one remarkably consistent story. Different writers sometimes emphasize different details, but diversity does not mean disagreement.

Think about the four Gospels. Matthew and Luke tell us about the birth of Jesus. Mark begins later, with His public ministry. John reaches even further back and begins before creation itself. They are telling the same truth from different perspectives. One writer may emphasize something another writer leaves out, but that does not make them contradictory.

The same is true when we look at the ancient manuscripts of the Bible. Skeptics sometimes point to textual variations as proof that Scripture cannot be trusted, but many of those differences are simply spelling variations, synonyms, or minor differences in wording that do not change the meaning of the passage or any central doctrine of the Christian faith.

My friend, you do not need to be afraid of asking hard questions about the Bible. Study it. Investigate it. Learn its history. Truth does not become weaker when we examine it.

The Bible Is More Than Something We Defend

Knowing why we can trust the Bible matters, but Scripture was never given merely so that we could win an argument. It was given to lead us through life.

Several years ago, I visited New York City with my daughter and a friend. We were unfamiliar with the city, so someone who knew it well came along with us and brought a map. All day long we kept asking the same question: What does the map say?

We trusted that map to help us navigate trains, subways, neighborhoods, and all the twists and turns of the city. We did not argue with it every time it told us to go a direction we had not expected. We simply wanted to know the best way forward.

My friend, that is what Scripture does for us. We are travelers in this world, and the Bible gives us direction for relationships, marriage, money, parenting, disappointment, temptation, and purpose. When you do not know what to do next, open the map.

Hebrews 4:12 tells us that the Word of God is living and active. The Bible does more than give us information. It exposes lies, confronts wrong thinking, reveals what is happening inside of us, and brings truth into places where our emotions have become confused. The Word of God will always go to the heart of the matter.

It is also a weapon when the enemy attacks. When fear tells you that God has forgotten you, answer with Scripture. When shame tells you that you are beyond redemption, answer with Scripture. When anxiety tells you that your future is hopeless, answer with Scripture. Read the Word, memorize the Word, and speak the Word.

    Let the Word Strengthen You

Psalm 119:28 says, “My soul weeps because of grief; strengthen me according to Your word.” Our souls become tired, disappointed, and wounded. There are seasons when life simply feels heavier than we ever expected it to feel.

But the Word of God strengthens us from the inside. It gives us something solid to stand on when our emotions are shifting beneath our feet. It helps us endure seasons we never imagined we would have to walk through.

And then Psalm 119:105 reminds us, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” God does not always illuminate the entire road ahead. Sometimes He gives us enough light for the next step, and then the next, and then the next.

The Bible is not merely an ancient religious book. It is truth. It is wisdom. It is strength. It is a weapon. It is a lamp. And through its pages, God reveals His heart to us.

The Bible is God’s mind and heart in written form.

So open it. Read it. Study it. Ask questions. And allow the Word of God to do its deep, healing work inside of you.

My prayer is that you would not simply believe the Bible because someone told you to. I pray that you would discover for yourself why it can be trusted, why it matters, and why its truth has the power to transform your life.
