Wicked mass shootings:  Unleash hope amidst darkness

Mass shootings are now a rising menace and epidemic.

May 24, 2022, marked a day of unspeakable horror as an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas, became the haunting backdrop of a mass shooting.

The magnitude of the unfolded tragedy defies words, for it claimed the lives of nineteen innocent young souls and two adults.

Moreover, the weight of heartbreak hangs heavy, leaving behind an immense void that echoes through shattered lives.

October 1, 2017, etched a harrowing chapter in our hearts as the Route 91 Harvest Festival in Las Vegas, Nevada, transformed into a nightmare.

From the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino, a lone gunman unleashed a reign of terror that defied comprehension.

For over 10 agonizing minutes, gunshots shattered the air, stealing the lives of 58 innocent souls. The aftermath left more than 850 wounded, including brave first responders.

Once a symbol of joy and togetherness, the festival was irrevocably marred by tragedy and engulfed in an overwhelming sorrow that still lingers.

The prevalence of mass shootings in modern society has tragically become all too common, leaving a devastating aftermath of grief and shattered lives.

Such harrowing incidents are stark reminders of the depths of human wickedness, underscoring the pressing necessity for comprehensive measures to address the root causes.

Addressing the harsh reality of mass shootings

However, Mass Shootings are not new.

Since Biblical times, this despicable act was often carried out or experienced by the Israelites, reflecting sinful people's hate and evil.

In Nazi-occupied territories seized from Soviet forces, mass shootings of Jews were carried out by Nazi Germany, its allies, and collaborators.

It was a brutal episode, often called the Holocaust by bullets, that resulted in the murder of approximately 2 million Jews through mass shootings and associated massacres.

The rising tide of mass shootings

In recent years, a chilling surge of mass shootings has gripped the United States.

Each incident, causing four or more injuries or deaths, paints a grim picture of devastation.

The toll is staggering, with the Gun Violence Archive reporting over 260 documented mass shootings in 2023 alone by late May.

The said numbers are a sobering reminder of the relentless violence plagues our communities. In the previous year, the tally reached 647 mass shootings, of which 21 incidents tragically resulted in five or more fatalities.

Facts about gun-related deaths in the US in 2021:

  • 48,830 people died from gun-related incidents in the US (2021)
  • 26,327 deaths from suicide (2021)
  • 20,958 deaths from homicide (2021)
  • Data shows more than 50 people are killed each day by a firearm in the US. (2021)
  • There were 390 million guns in circulation in the US (2018)

The devastating loss of life

The human toll of mass shootings is incomprehensible. Innocent lives are abruptly cut short, leaving behind grieving families, friends, and communities.

Each victim is a unique individual with dreams, aspirations, and contributions to make. Their loss represents an immeasurable tragedy that must be acknowledged and remembered.

Psychological trauma

Mass shootings inflict severe psychological trauma on survivors and witnesses.

Traumatic events have far-reaching effects on individuals, families, and communities, leading to mental health challenges like post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, depression, and survivor's guilt.

The emotional scars left behind are profound and can reshape lives. There are consequences that extend beyond the initial incident, creating ripples that impact multiple levels of society.

The complex motivations

Understanding the motivations behind mass shootings is crucial for effective prevention and intervention.

While each case is unique, certain common factors have been identified.

Some shooters may harbor deep-rooted grievances, suffer from mental health disorders, or exhibit a desire for notoriety.

The challenge lies in identifying potential warning signs and providing the necessary support and intervention to prevent such acts of violence.

The impact on society

Mass shootings have a far-reaching impact on society. They erode feelings of safety and security, leaving individuals and communities fearful and anxious

Educational institutions, workplaces, and public spaces become targets of heightened security measures, affecting our way of life and creating a sense of collective trauma.

The psychological toll on society cannot be underestimated.

"Then Pharaoh commanded all his people, 'Every son that is born to the Hebrews you shall cast into the Nile, but you shall let every daughter live.'" - Exodus 1:22

In a harrowing chapter of the Israelites' history, Pharaoh, the ruler of Egypt, imposed a cruel decree detailed in biblical accounts.

Motivated by the fear of the growing Israelite population, Pharaoh ordered the drowning of every male Hebrew child in the Nile while sparing the lives of the female infants.

Such appalling action can be understood as an oppressive tactic to subjugate and manipulate the Israelites and a genocidal scheme aimed at diminishing their numbers and eroding their strength.

It represents a dark period of cruelty and power abuse. However, this tragic command set the stage for significant events to come.

Among the infants affected by this decree was Moses, who was placed in a basket and set adrift on the Nile by his mother.

Miraculously, he was discovered by Pharaoh's daughter and raised in the palace.

The mass murder of the Israelites by Pharaoh is a pivotal moment in the biblical narrative.

It ultimately led to the liberation of the Israelites from their enslavement in Egypt, with Moses playing a central role in their journey to freedom.

Lawlessness: A Biblical perspective on mass shootings

"And because lawlessness will be increased, the love of many will grow cold." – Matthew 24:12

In His earthly ministry, Jesus speaks about a time when lawlessness will increase.

The message is part of Jesus' discourse known as the Olivet Discourse, where he discusses the signs of the end times and the coming of the Son of Man.

From a biblical perspective, lawlessness refers to a disregard for God's laws and principles and a general breakdown of moral and ethical standards in society.

It represents a state where people rebel against God's authority and reject His commands.

When examining the issue of mass shootings, we can draw some connections.

Mass shootings involve individuals or groups committing extreme violence, often resulting in multiple deaths.

Such acts can be seen as a manifestation of lawlessness because they completely disregard the sanctity of human life, the commandment against murder, and the principles of love and compassion that Jesus taught.

The increasing frequency of mass shootings in recent times aligns with Jesus' warning about lawlessness in the last days.

It suggests that as lawlessness grows, people's love and compassion for one another will diminish. This notion can be observed in the callousness and lack of empathy displayed by individuals who commit such heinous acts.

Plus, it is important to note that while Jesus' words provide insight into the nature of lawlessness and its potential consequences, they do not offer a specific explanation or solution for mass shootings.

The Bible is not a comprehensive manual on social issues or a source of detailed reasons for every problem we face in society.

Instead, it provides broad principles and teachings that guide individuals and communities in living righteous and compassionate lives.

Pursuing the plea of Habakkuk

"O Lord, how long shall I cry for help, and you will not hear? Or cry to you "Violence!" and you will not save? Why do you make me see iniquity, and why do you idly look at wrong? Destruction and violence are before me; strife and contention arise." - Habakkuk 1:2-3

Prophet Habakkuk fearlessly voiced his dissatisfaction to God concerning the violence and injustice prevailing in the land of Judah.

The Lord's people were chronologically caught between the horrific reigns of the Assyrians and the Babylonians.

With an apparent disdain for the wickedness and oppression there, he simultaneously protested and prayed, channeling his anger as a means of expression.

Mass shootings epitomize the darkest aspects of human depravity. The devastating loss of life, profound psychological trauma, and wide-ranging societal impacts demand our unwavering attention.

As Christians, we are called to combat lawlessness by embodying the love and teachings of Jesus Christ.

It involves cultivating a heart of compassion, reaching out to hurting people, and actively promoting justice, peace, and reconciliation in our communities.

Let us utter the prayers of the lament of Habakkuk to reach out to God for deliverance from the menace of mass shootings.

In Christ, we find safety and refuge in a turbulent world.
