Working While You Sleep

Do you get enough sleep? If you are the typical American, probably not. You’ve got too much to do, right? And when you finally crawl into bed, there’s all that social media to scroll through … and don’t forget that YouTube video (or two or eight).

We don’t get enough sleep. You know that. This is not the first time I’ve fussed at my faithful readers about the need for rest. But lest we forget, God created us to need sleep. He even wants us to set aside ONE WHOLE DAY to rest.

I know, I know. You do have a lot to do. Work can be demanding. It would be nice if you could work while you sleep. (I’m not talking about sleeping at work. That’s not a good way to earn points with the boss, nor is it recommended if you drive an Amazon truck.)

Work while you sleep. Hmmm.

A company called Prophetic is working on just that idea. They are focusing on lucid dreaming, that state in which a person is aware he is asleep. For a mere $2000, you can wear a headband that releases sound waves into the area of the brain responsible for lucid dreams. They believe that we can be productive when we are in a lucid dream state. Lucid dreaming is not a common, everyday occurrence, but the goal is to get a person in a state of lucid dreaming so that he can solve problems and access his untapped creativity. In other words, work.

You can save most of that $2000 just by buying a good pillow. You’ll get a good night’s sleep and wake up refreshed. A rested body and mind can then tackle that problem.

I’m not opposed to tapping into our body’s potential, but is developing a way to work while we sleep really tapping into the body’s potential? God is not opposed to technology, but the Master Creator designed our bodies and wired them so that the maximum benefit comes because we rest. Not as we rest, but because we rest.

“I lie down and sleep; I wake again because the Lord sustains me” (Ps. 3:5).

“In vain you get up early and stay up late, working hard to have enough food—yes, he gives sleep to the one he loves” (Ps. 127:2).

Jesus valued rest.

“He said to them, ‘Come away by yourselves to a remote place and rest for a while.’ For many people were coming and going, and they did not even have time to eat” (Mark 6:31).

Toss the headband. Let your mind and body shut down. It’s OK. Work will be there in the morning.

    The Mall or the Manger?

Much has changed since the God of the universe decorated the night sky with the star of Bethlehem and directed the choir of angels in a chorus announcing the birth of Our Savior, Jesus Christ. But the commercialism doesn’t have to rule in our hearts and homes. This year let’s focus on the Christ Child and remember the true meaning of the holiday season. As we turn our eyes to the Babe in the manger, we will not view Christmas as a dreaded obligation or a major retail event. It will be a time of joyous celebration, honoring the One Who came to give us eternal life and worshipping our Heavenly Father.
