Working with My Editor

I've employed the services of an independent editor, and boy, is she tough. I usually enjoy the process of being critiqued and edited. Even though I may not take the suggestions given, they open up my mind to other possibilities. (Right now I’m envisioning a picture of the top of my head exploding.) This is not always the case though. I once paid one thousand dollars to an editor who had so many negatives to say, I couldn't concentrate on her few positive suggestions.
But back to my current editor ... I found her on a friend's blog, impressed by her description of what to look for in an editor. "Ask your potential editor to give you a sample edit," she advised. So I asked her and liked that she challenged me to dig deeper, at the same time, encouraging me by validating the direction of my work. Now that she's edited my entire bloody memoir, she's still encouraging me and challenging me to dig deeper. That's when I reach for the chocolate.

Blessing,
Linda

Note:

If you're in the process of writing a memoir, I'd love to hear about your challenges and breakthroughs. Or if you'd like to recommend a memoir to me and my readers, I hope you'll do so.
