Worship and the Word – kenbarnes.us

God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.” (John 4:24 ESV)

The Church collectively or Christians individually need to maintain a balance between worship and the Word of God. The spirit without the truth or vi ce versa is like a horse without a carriage, it is not going anywhere.

Psalms 100:1 ESV, Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth! Serve the Lo  rd with gladness! Come into his presence with singing! The Tribe of Judah, which means “praise” when traveling, always led the way. Praise has always led the way into the courts of the Lord. But worship without the Scriptures never brings about the full revelation of the Holy One.

The story of the woman at the well in John Chapter 4 gives great insight into how we should worship. The woman mentions that the Samaritans worship on Mt. Gerizim and that Jews worship in Jerusalem, and she wants to know the right place to worship. The Samaritans were known for their emotional or heartfelt worship. The Jews were known for their devotion to God based on the Books of the Law. Now, Jesus knew that Jerusalem would be the birthplace of Christianity. Yet, he does not take sides. He says in John 4:23 ESV, But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him.

Jesus told her that it is not so important where you worship but how you worship; vs. 24, God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth. Christianity is a journey through your heart and your mind. I have a little plague on my bathroom shelf that says, follow your heart, but don’t forget your brain

All truth and no spirit, and you dry up. All spirit and no truth, and you blow up. Spirit and truth, and you grow up.
