Year of Gratitude
As a new year begins, it is common for us to think about goals and aspirations. How can we not? Everywhere we turn the media is taunting us to be more, do more, have more; suggesting that we are not enough.
The change of the calendar can bring about a re-evaluation of our lives. Asking yourself: How am I doing? What areas do I need to improve upon? During your New Year self-examination, I encourage you to also consider your gratitude meter. Are you making gratitude a priority in your life?
For my 50th birthday, I began the year by hand writing 50 notes of gratitude to people who made a positive impact in my life. That simple act set the pace for one of the most joy-filled years of my life.
Most of us were taught manners as young children, and while saying “thank you” is important, the measure of our sincerity comes from the heart — not just saying the words, “thank you,” but by being thankful.
Creating a heart of gratitude takes time, patience, and practice. Research shows that having a heart of gratitude improves our relationships, our sleep, our health, and our self-esteem. It also decreases our anger and aggression. 1 Thessalonians 5:18 tells us to “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” Like any goal, it is a choice.
There are numerous avenues for practicing gratitude. One of my favorites is called Prayer, Care and Share. First, pray. Tell God who and what you are thankful for. It is important for us to be grateful to God for all the blessings in our lives. Second, care. Care enough to write down what you are grateful for and make a plan to put your thoughts into action. Gratitude-journaling can be as simple as listing three (or more) people or things you are grateful for. I recommend starting each day or ending each evening by doing this. Finally, share. Share your gratitude. You do not need to send 50 handwritten notes to make a difference. You can start by telling other people what you appreciate about them. Speaking kind, authentic words encourages others more than you may ever know.
Living a life of gratitude will bless you immensely. When your heart is filled with thankfulness, you, and those around you, can’t help but experience great joy!
Question for Reflection:
What is one thing you can do each day this year to express your gratitude to God? Second, what is one thing you can do to express your gratitude to others in your daily walk of life?
