Here are my personal favorite go-to solutions for how to get rid of back pain naturally and ease the overall effects of stress.

1. Microwaveable Bead Wraps

# 1 – Ultra Premium Herbal Heating Pad – Microwavable – Hot Cold Therapy – Certified Organic Herbs, Organic Flaxseed & Cherry Pit Filler

# 2 – Warming Shoulder Wrap With Soothing Moisture Technology – Natra Cure

# 3 – Body Wrap – Hot & Cold Therapy – Natural Clay Beads

This ingenious invention works much like weighted blankets do for easing anxiety and depression. They are comforting and calming, while the heat relaxes away the pain.

Even as I sit here at my desk typing this right now, I am wearing my heated bead wrap around my neck and draping down by upper back.

It’s a bit of pampering while getting some work done. Who doesn’t love that?

I’ve had my heated bead wrap for at least 10 years now. It still works perfectly as if it were brand new and that’s what I love about these.

Pros:

  • Flexible for use on many different painful areas of the body
  • Heat up in the microwave so there’s no need for electric cords!
  • Many options are stuffed with healing herbs or essential oils for powerful aromatherapy
  • Beads add a slight weight that is very comforting
  • Some are freezable for hot/cold therapy. Cold therapy is best for reducing inflammation, while heat therapy relaxes away tension.

Cons:

  • The heat may not last as long as you’d like or need sometimes.
  • Be careful to read instructions for heating times. They vary and these can/will burn if heated for too long in the microwave

2. Supplement with Magnesium

Many years ago, during one of my quests for natural pain relief, I came across some information on Magnesium deficiency.

One of the hallmark symptoms of low magnesium are painful, sore muscles and a feeling of tension throughout your body. Magnesium is required for many of the most critical biological functions. #chronicpain #fibromyalgia #naturalliving

Many people poorly absorb Magnesium into their cells and I was one of them! If you suffer from chronic pain, depressive episodes, are prone to anxiety and sleeplessness, or have ‘gut troubles,’ you might be in the same boat!

Transdermal magnesium oil is already in a form your body can use. What this means for us is an effective way to deliver this critical mineral, easing pain and other troublesome symptoms quickly.

How To Use Magnesium Oil Spray

  1. Spray 1 or 2 pumps on sore area of the body
  2. Allow the spray to soak into skin for 10-20 minutes
  3. If stinging or itching is a problem, rinse off after oil has had time to absorb

If you do experience burning or itching, this is a normal reaction. Typically, with consistent use, this pesky side effect will diminish.

If the itching or stinging becomes too intense, simply rinse off. Try and wait as long as you can so that the magnesium has a chance to absorb through your skin. (Unless of course you are having an obvious allergic reaction!)

Best time of day to use? The most common use is 1-2 hours before bedtime to increase relaxation and decrease stress. I have, however, used it before attending high-stress gatherings and found it helpful!

Asutra magnesium body butter is an alternative to the oil spray for those who prefer a creamier lotion-type application.

I like it because of the skin-nurturing benefits of shea butter and other vitamins. For sensitive skin sufferers, this might be the better option for you.

What’s also nice about the Asutra magnesium body butter is the addition of MSM for joint pain relief. Magnesium and MSM make for a powerful 1-2 punch.

I also take, as a supplement, 1-3 tablets each evening of this Doctor’s Best Elemental Magnesium. It’s the best I’ve found and it is less likely to cause digestive distress!

I recommend starting with 1 tablet around 1 to 2 hours before bedtime. Work your way up, if needed. For me, 3 is the maximum my body handles well.

The most important thing is finding what works for YOU because each of us will have different needs.

I’d recommend starting with the magnesium cream or spray. It’s more easily absorbed and it doesn’t have to pass through your digestive system. We all know magnesium’s reputation. 😉

3. TENS Unit Therapy

If you’re unfamiliar with TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) for pain relief, I’m so glad you’re here!

It used to be that TENS therapy was only available in a doctor’s office or other medical settings. Each visit would typically last 30 minutes to 1 hour and the cost was not cheap.

It put a hurtin’ on my wallet!

Now, you can receive the incredible benefits of pain relief right at home. No expensive doctor visits!

These TENS units are incredibly simple to use, affordable, and can be as effective, if not more so, than pain pills for many people.

How do they work? In short, reusable sticky pads get placed around the area causing you the most discomfort.

Painless pulses stimulate the nerve fibers to block pain signals to/from your brain.

It’s hard to describe the sensation but when used on the proper settings, this therapy feels like a really deep massage. You feel the muscle contract and relax.

One of the most impressive ‘side effects’ of TENS therapy is how it activates our feel-good hormones, also known as endorphins. It’s our body’s way of speeding up the healing process.

This powerful reaction immediately reduces or eliminates pain and offers us the real relief we’ve been longing for, all without the use of any chemicals.

Here are our current top picks available on Amazon:

Dual Channel TENS EMS Unit 24 Modes Muscle Stimulator for Pain Relief Therapy

Where TENS therapy is concerned, it really doesn’t matter what the cause of your pain is. There’s a good chance one of these units with regular usage will help improve your quality of life too.

4. Essential Oils

In his book, “The Healing Power of Essential Oils,” Dr. Eric Zielinski taught us a whole lot about chronic inflammation and how to get rid of back pain naturally with the help of essential oils.

In fact, this book is our go-to resource at the moment for all types of pain, infections, and natural solutions!

My husband and I both are healthy skeptics when it comes to trying new “remedies.”

Much to our delight, there are a few that actually work.

rapid relief essential oil blend: how to get rid of back pain naturally

Rapid Relief is a real worker bee when added with your other efforts to relieve back pain naturally.

The potent blend of Peppermint, Clove Bud, Laurel Leaf, Black Pepper, Cinnamon Cassia, Ginger Root, German Chamomile, Juniper Berry, and Thyme brings all of the very best anti-inflammatory pain relievers into one bottle.

If you are familiar with Icy Hot and products like it, the sensation is very familiar. By increasing the warmth and circulation to the painful area, your perception of the pain is temporarily dulled.

Unlike other products, the benefits of essential oils go far beyond that of just a brief relief. It’s not a miracle cure by any means but it definitely helps!

How to use: Add just a few drops to your favorite carrier oil and apply to the painful area. It’s that simple!

Significant pain relief happens quickly.

5. Shiatsu Massagers

Words cannot express how much of a lifesaver this shiatsu massager has been on some of my most high-stress, painful days. If you’ve already applied essential oils to your sore spots and then use this after, the relief is incredible.

HELPFUL TIP: If you suffer from a pain condition that makes deep tissue massage especially tender – place a thin blanket or towel between you and this massager. This prevents the kneading knobs from being too intense. Some days I can use mine without the barrier and others I cannot.

At least 2x per week, you will find me, reading material in hand, or soaking worship music playing, while a glowing red alien-ish looking device soothes my aches and pains away. I sure have kept our cats entertained! 🤣

Each of these has been amazingly helpful for different reasons. You can’t go wrong!

If you have curly hair like I do, you’ll need to be careful not to move the scalp massager without picking it up off the scalp first. This helps prevent tangling. 🙂 Found out the hard way!

6. Side Sleeper Back Pain Relief

I discovered years ago that placing a wedge or body pillow in between my knees took the pressure off of my hips and back.

A few benefits of using a knee wedge:

  • Relieve sciatica pain
  • Relieve pregnancy related pain and pressure
  • Eases lower back pain and pressure
  • Aids in surgery recovery
  • Helps to keep spine in proper alignment

What’s even better is if you wedge a fluffy pillow behind your back for more support. It feels much like a really nice hug all over your body! 🙂

If you don’t have a wedge available, and it’s not in your budget to buy one – what about an extra pillow lying around? Try placing that between your knees instead.
