The problem with obsessing over virginity…Idolatry!

Good day beautiful people

I hope that this message meets you well? As promised I will be writing more about love and relationships for the next few weeks. Today’s topic is about virginity. Now as I’ve mentioned before I believe that sex is good and has been created by God to be thoroughly enjoyed within the confines of marriage between husband and wife. But reality is that not everyone embraces such a lifestyle and at times Christian’s do fall into sexual sin such as adultery and fornication.

Adultery: Voluntary sexual intercourse between a married person and a person who is not their spouse.

Fornication: Sexual intercourse between people not married to each other.

But we thank God for His grace and mercy because He sent a Saviour (Christ God the Son) to deliver us from the power of sin through His death on the cross and His resurrection, and when we confess our sins (this includes sexual sins) God is faithful and just to forgive.

1 John 1:9 ~ “But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness.”

The main point I desire to highlight in today’s post is that nobody should be using their virginity OR body count to diminish another humans worth…Don’t use your sexual purity to bring others down! I know it can go both ways and people can embarrass others for not having a high body count. But let us who’re in Christ never make people feel worthless because they’re not virgins. Don’t turn your virginity into an idol.

Sadly certain communities emphasis on chastity has turned peoples focus away from God onto self proclaimed righteousness/works. At the end of the day a persons virginity or lack of sexual intimacy before marriage will not get them to heaven unless they accept Christ as their Saviour (accept salvation). We’re not saved by works but by grace. Also the Bible states that our righteousness is like filthy rags before God.

Something similar happened during the time where the early church was established with regards to circumcision (Galatians 6).

Galatians 6:12 ~ “Those who are trying to force you to be circumcised want to look good to others. They don’t want to be persecuted for teaching that the cross of Christ alone can save.”

^^^The cross of Christ alone saves!

Galatians 6:14 ~ “As for me, may I never boast about anything except the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ. Because of that cross, my interest in this world has been crucified, and the world’s interest in me has also died.”

^^^ Boast only in the cross and not your achievements. Your good works don’t get you into heaven, the blood of Christ does.

I would like to clarify that I am in no way expressing that staying pure is unimportant or irrelevant! God commands believers to avoid sexual temptation on several occasions. So do continue to aspire to stay sexually pure and do it for the GLORY OF GOD. Do it to honour Him and not to boast in your own achievements in order to bring others down, because at the end of the day we’re saved by the grace of God alone.

Ephesians 2:8 ~ “God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God.”

^^^ We’re saved by God’s grace alone. We can never ever take credit for it. Our good works will never be enough.

Ephesians 2:9 ~ “Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it.”

^^^ Salvation is not a reward for the good things one does!

Verses which encourage us to stay sexually pure.

1 Corinthians 6:18 ~ Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the sexually immoral person sins against his own body.

1 Thessalonians 4:3-5 ~ For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you abstain from sexual immorality; that each one of you know how to control his own body in holiness and honor, 5 not in the passion of lust like the Gentiles who do not know God;

Hebrews 13:4 ~ Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled, for God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterous.

Romans 6:11-14 ~ So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus. Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, to make you obey its passions. Do not present your members to sin as instruments for unrighteousness, but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, and your members to God as instruments for righteousness. For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace.

1 Thessalonians 4:3 ~ For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you abstain from sexual immorality;

Ephesians 5:3 ~ But sexual immorality and all impurity or covetousness must not even be named among you, as is proper among saints.

2 Timothy 2:22 ~ “Run from anything that stimulates youthful lusts. Instead, pursue righteous living, faithfulness, love, and peace. Enjoy the companionship of those who call on the Lord with pure hearts.”

Matthew 5:8 ~ “God blesses those whose hearts are pure, for they will see God.”

I hope you enjoyed today’s short read. God bless and stay safe.
