A New Heaven and a New Earth

in Revelation 21:1-2 John writes, “I saw a new heaven and a new earth…And I saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God.

New JerusalemNew Jerusalem, composed of God mingled with al His people, is new because it is a product of God’s divine, eternal life. New Jerusalem is a city absolutely in resurrection. In contrast, the new creation surrounding the city is new due to God’s renewing work, as described in 2 Peter 3:10-13 and Hebrews 1:12.

The renewing of the old creation to become the new creation does not involve the eternal life of God. It will not be like the renewing of God’s people accomplished by the Spirit within them, as mentioned in Titus 3:5.

The renewing of the creation is not of life and Spirit but it will restore everything to the state it was in at the time of Genesis 1-2. There will be no sin, no death, no unrighteousness, no wars. Because the new creation will be in righteousness, it will have peace and joy. These characteristics will be enjoyed by the nations living on the new earth around New Jerusalem.

    The Mall or the Manger?

Much has changed since the God of the universe decorated the night sky with the star of Bethlehem and directed the choir of angels in a chorus announcing the birth of Our Savior, Jesus Christ. But the commercialism doesn’t have to rule in our hearts and homes. This year let’s focus on the Christ Child and remember the true meaning of the holiday season. As we turn our eyes to the Babe in the manger, we will not view Christmas as a dreaded obligation or a major retail event. It will be a time of joyous celebration, honoring the One Who came to give us eternal life and worshipping our Heavenly Father.
